Not as good as the Staples deal a few months back 160GB maxtor for $37 AR, $67 no rebate.

This gets really old.

Why not save DB space and time for other posters by taking your "omnipotent" deal supervision elsewhere....and maybe consider getting something else in your life.

You're getting upset because I'm informing users that paying 62 cents/gig is not a hot deal at all? You have a little growing up to do grasshopper

dabuddah, you've been here long enough to know the rules. No threadcrapping. What's the point in bringing up an old deal that's not good anymore other than to say, "Look at me, I got a better deal than you!"?

Thanks for the post Chunkee, I just ordered. I hate rebates .

Perhaps you both missed my point again. I was pointing out an older deal to PROVE that this is not that hot of a deal. It's not a bad deal, just not a good one. Anything over 50 cents a gig is considered not hot by ATHDers. Same thing people said about the $49.99 80 gig seagate drive deal at bestbuy a few weeks back.
This is not considered threadcrapping. This is considered "Pointing out that this is not too hot of a deal so some poor ATHDers can save their money and get a better deal." If there is such a term

Thanks, Chunkee. I hate dealing with rebate companies, too. My 15 off 75 coupon card makes this deal even sweeter.

And I've had the exact opposite experience as you. I've had multiple Maxtors and never had a problem. Picked up a 160GB WD and I'm now sending in for RMA after a month and a half. Pisses me off but I've had good luck so far and haven't lost any data. Still not as bad as my first tech job. We sold Quantum drives and had "The Block" for repairs. Hard drive come in that wasn't spinning, just give it a whack and off you go. And this was done on hundreds of drives. Guess that's why they're no longer in business.

I remember those early Quantum drives that had "sticktion" problems. I have (had) a few WD 1GB WDAC31000 IDE drives that also had spinup problems, although that's the only problem that they had, considering that they were nearly 10 years old. (Probably spindle motor lubrication drying up.) I threw them into some old systems that I gave away.

Anyways, I wasn't trying to say that all Maxtors are bad, but it does seem like they've had particular issues with their DM+9 line, with the 60GB platters and FDB bearings. When I see those reports online of Maxtor drives dying, it's usually one of those. I was trying to find out if there was something different in the design or components of their 160GB model, hopefully they've fixed whatever problems the earlier models had. The fact that they moved the majority of their production to a country not known for quality labor practices, is hardly reassuring on that fact though.

Btw, Thanks Chunkee, for posting this deal, it IS a hot deal, especially the no-rebates part. I just have some personal reservations about this drive line, that's all.

man, i just remember not too long ago when it was a hot deal if you could come up with a way with rebates and price matching to crack the $1/gb threshold.

Just got my $30 rebate from Maxtor today for the last 160 GB drive purchased from Staples when they were subbing for the 120. $34 and change for a 160 Maxtor has to rank as one of my best deals ever. I know this should be in Brag & Moan, but I couldn't resist. IMO $.50 or less a GB is a Hot Deal and above that isn't so great. In my experience Maxtor always comes through with a rebate check although they can be slow at times.

I just received mine today as well!! I'd have to say it was one of my hottest deals in awhile as well.

Not to thread crap, as this is quite a deal... I was even tempted at this price... but Maxtor has lost almost all respect with me. Their warrranty is good, yes, but I don't want to deal with the hassle of exchanges. I'm a tech, so I build a fair share of systems, as well as repair them, all of all the faulty drives I've dealt with over the past two years, only one was not a Maxtor. They're okay for OS and software storage, but I'd leave all your mp3s/videos/word-files/any-thing-else-you-don't-want-to-lose on another drive.

I don't know what other people do to their harddrives, but I've used several Maxtors, WD's, and even two IBM drives (a deskstar 40gb one, no less) and I've NEVER had a drive fail. I think there is more to it than simply Maxtor shipping out bad drives, I blame users who don't take care of their systems properly. DOA is another story, but I have yet to experience that with a drive from any manufacturer either.

Its a good deal I just wish it was SATA. SATA retail drives are comming out slow in number and slow for sale. Oem is easy to get but no sales.

FWIW,
sometimes Frys Electronics runs instant rebate deals on these drives without advertising it. I got one for 160gb 8mb cache for $89 a few months ago.
