Ok - don't thread crap about this not being a fast drive, not everyone needs speed, sometimes mass storage is what's really needed. If you can find a 7200 RPM drive for this price, let me know... otherwise, here's the deal...

Buy at Staples for $229.99 (item 473406). Use $50 off $200 coupon (that's hot! and yes there is one. Unfortunately rules here say can't post it so be on the look out for it). Then submit price match request against CompUSA who has this drive for $209.99 this week. Staples will provide 110% pricematch adjustment ($22). Then submit $30 rebate.

$229.99
- 50.00 coupon (seek and ye shall find)
- 22.00 price match adjustment (go to CompUSA.com for their sales flyer)
- 30.00 rebate (available on Staples site)
-------
$127.99!!!!!
=====

Want to make this hotter? Then sign up for UPROMISE.COM 529 COLLEGE PLAN, Staples is doubling the contribuion to 4% (that's another $5 saved for college). Staples Gold Business Rewards gets you another 5% (sign up for their rewards, it's free cash). There's also a place that gives you 2.2% back on Staples purchases, similar to Ebates and this will help you build up a fat wallet if you know what I mean. Use Discover for another 1% back (or my preference is GM card for 5% towards furture GM car purchase, but I've already maxed that out for the year).

All totaled, that's another $20+ in savings, dicsounts, rebates and just plain ol' free cash...

Good find. Looks like a bit of work, but that's what we do here.

Hmm, did you do this. I don't think that the pricematch will give you $22.00 difference. The actual price difference is only $20 dollars so won't they only give you that difference? Will they allow a coupon with the 110% pricematch adjustment? Thanks.

Yes, I've done the deal (twice now). The $22 is $20 difference plus 10% (Staples has 110% price matching). My actual credit back was $23.42 (tax too). Coupon is allowed as total price is still above the $200 total. I actually bought the drive last week, thought it was hot then.... it's on fire now....

Are you looking at the same drive?

Staples.com Price - $229.99 - $30 Mfg MIR

CompUSA/CompUSA.com price - $229.99 - $20 Instant Rebate - $30 Mfg MIR

PM Staples to CompUSA price after Instant Rebate $229.99 - $20- IR = $209.99

PM @ 110% = $22.00 ( $20 x 110%)

Staples net price of $207.99 after PM before tax , before $30 MIR and before coupon if you can get Staples.comCSR to allow you to use a coupon after the PM (YMMV here)

Anyone got a coupon code? I found one because I was a cap-
able shopper, but the link is broken.

Edit: Thanks, I found a new code in only 7 minutes.

I guess you have missed something, it's available right from the Staples site - click on the "REBATE CENTER" link in the upper left corner of the Staples website.

We'll this makes three orders for this drive and I received a pricematch and used coupon on each. I submitted by price match request via their online price match submission link (available from their website).

Bob61, can you please tell us exactly what you wrote in the price match request to get this to work? Their policy clearly states that all coupons, rebates and promotions will be included in their price to calculate the price match. So, their price of 229 - 50 coupon - 30 MIR = 149 which is less that CompUSA's price of 209 (not to mention shipping), so there would be no price match. Everytime I've ever tried something like this, they always refer me to this policy. So again, can you please tell us exactly what wording you used to get this deal to work? And also, how did you handle their shipping policy?

I've had good luck with pricematching, then adding a cheap item, then adding a coupon when ordering over the phone.

Oh, and to simple things up a bit:
Go to Staples.
Search for item number 473406.
Check fatwallet.com hot deals forum for the 50 off coupon in a thread called "50 Degree Celcius Tivo Hot (2) 80GB Maxtor 5400rpm for $150 (no rebate) after $50 Staples coupon".
Link to Staples' price match request form.
CompUSA's item mumber for the hard drive is 286676 to reference in price match request.
Link to Staples' Rebate Center.

What's the best way to buy 3 of the drives? I'd like to install it in a RAID 5 setup with a Promise SuperTrak 6000 ATA RAID card. Seems like the rebate is limited to one per household. Would I need to ship the >drives< to separate households, or just the rebate? (Drives is more difficult, as credit card verification will usually only allow you to ship to your billing address).

Thanks in advance.

Nope, Staples will quote their policy of matching "net" price. Staples net price is $149 and CUSA is $209 so Staples will say no way to the price match since they're already lower.

The days of price matching before the discount/rebate pricing are almost over. At least at Staples, OM, and CC.

The only way to accomplish your idea is to get a stupid CSR who doesn't know (or care) about their policy.

Let's see... that's 2 for my Tivo's and 1 for my PC system. Easy enough to undertand?

Here is what I wrote:
Hi - I purchased Maxtor 160GB hard drive (item 47340) for $229.99 from Staples on 8/8. CompUSA is now offering this for $209.99 after $20 instant rebate (there is also a $30 mail in rebate making total price $179.99).

This offer is available "in store" so no charge for delivery.

Here is link to their website that shows their sales circular: http://www.compusa.com/AdProducts/ad_products_info.asp?category_id=454

Here is link to their website for item detail:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=286676

Here's one of the responses, all are very similar and from different CSR's:

We appreciate your inquiry concerning this issue, Bob.

Thank you for bringing the lower price on item Maxtor 160 GB 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive at
www.compusa.com to our attention. We have matched the price at 110%. You will receive a credit of
$23.42 to your Master Card.

We price matched this item to $209.99.

Maybe due to the amount of items I buy there I get some special treatment

If the coupon is $50 off a xxx order, then purchase some cheap stuff. The price match is product specific, and the coupon is for the whole order. You can say you are using the $50 on the cheap stuff and the price match on the hard drive.

Almost everyone is quoting staples policy incorrectly. Staples pricematch policy is item specific. You cant pricematch the item if it has a coupon for that item.
