So, every year my wife spends money to market the area we live in. For the 4th of July she buys hundreds of little American flags you stick in the ground and she goes around our neighborhood and plants one in the lawn of every house. It has her business card on the stick and says compliments of Mrs. JulesMaximus on it. Anyway, she's out doing this today and some nutjob busybody comes along and starts yelling at her telling her she is denegrating the flag and she's littering and she's going to call the cops on her. My wife politely offered to take her off her list and not market her house in the future but apparently that's not good enough.

Great. Why do we always get the whackos???

She's had quite a bit of positive feedback from other residents in the past when she's done this, I don't see what the big deal is.
Oh, I didn't realize you were married! I thought you were single or divorced with a kid.

Anyway, yeah, it's nice of your wife (i.e., a nice gesture), but I think other people's property should be respected too. One man's treasure is another man's trash. She should consider acquainting herself with neighbors in the future so she has an idea of who would appreciate it and who wouldn't.

j0hnny, shut the fvck up.

No, it's OT, you go STFU. There are many hardliners who would love to shoot people who burn flags, etc.

I was brought up knowing that we should defend the honor and integrity of the American flag. Do you know how many people died for what it represents?

Someone puts flags out at all our mailboxes every year at this time and I think it looks great with all the flags waving up and down the street. However, the US flag code does say "The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever" and "Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown." So maybe that's where the nutjob is coming from.

Where I live you don't put shat in peoples lawn without permision. I learned the hard way once by putting a politcal banner for a local Liberal lesbian in my Bible thumping brothers lawn

I'd rather have a flag on the front of my lawn than what some other realtors put on my front door. Rocks with business cards, notepads, flyers stuck to my doorknob and slipped into the door. Don't mind those a$$hole neighbors. They're just angry at everything.

That's actually a good point. If "free speech" allows us to burn the flag, free speech should allow us to do just about anything with it, including advertisement.

Not really, she's just delivering a flag and letting them know who it is from. There is nothing on there that says call so and so if you want to sell your house. It's just a flag with a compliments of tag on it.

Oh, bullsh!t. you said she was marketing in the first sentence of your first post. And since when does a realtor's business card not say "Realtor" and have a phone number on it?

Unless your wife's business card actully reads "Have a happy 4th of July, here's a flag courtesy of Mrs. Jules Maximus", she was out doing marketing, like you said in the first place.

Well, of course it is marketing...She isn't just doing this out of the kindness of her heart, she wants to sell houses but I don't see that this is a big deal. Fvck, all kinds of businesses run these big patriotic ad campaigns with the American flag on it for 4th of July weekend. They are clearly using the holiday to make money. Do you people boycott those businesses because they are using the flag and this holiday to try to make money?

I would not want somebody to place a flag, no matter what size, on my property without my knowledge first. And about calling the cops, I think somebody could get the cops to come by saying that somebody is trespassing on their property. I would definately confront somebody on my property if they were trying to place a flag in the ground.

It's advertising for her, plain and simple. And using the flag, and putting one in everyone's yard.

Yeah I wouldn't like that either.

Agreed. Sticking something like a flag in somebody's yard with your little advert on it is unacceptable where I live.

Personally, I wouldn't really care about the flag so much, I just wouldn't want people leaving thier advertisements (or thier trash, or anything else for that matter)in my front yard. How would you like it if during the last presidential election, someone went and put up "Bush" or "Kerry" signs (whichever you liked the least) in everyone's yard, including yours?

I think I'd just ask her to stop. But it's not a reason to threaten or go psycho over. I don't want other people on my property, or putting stuff on my property.

my mother also sells homes and she sends out calendars to everyone yearly with a fridge magnet and her business card attached. i think it's great exposure.

while i am trying to see the other side of the issue, if someone doesn't want the flag, they can simply remove it. a free flag is never a bad thing. i'd like one, in fact, but never got around to buying one.

Well, I think the "courtesy of" card gets around that "rule". Technically, she's not selling anything or asking you to buy anything-just letting you know who left the flag. The card can be pulled off easily and discarded just leaving the flag.

If you don't want my bag of trash, you can simply remove it from your doorstep.

If you think that someone putting a flag in your yard or hanging a bag with real estate stuff in it is a big deal and actually WORTH complaining about, you must lead a pretty spectacular life with all issues resolved.

This sort of reminds me of the frequent Fark headlines. "Having solved all other problems, congress looks to ban Mario for stereotyping Italians"

I think what she's doing is in bad taste, but would have been more tactful when approaching her. Just like with telemarketers, the best way to get off the list is by asking politely, rather than acting confrontational.
