That's also a good point. The American flag is never supposed to touch the ground. If it does then it is considered to have been desecrated. Once that happens proper protocol is to dispose of it in a ceremonial burning.

That isn't true. You're supposed to avoid having the flag touch the ground, but you don't have to destroy it if it does. If it touches and gets dirty, clean it and try to be more careful in the future.

I don't mind it, but I still think it's pretty "invasive" to do that to other people's property. They are the ones who'll have to eventually remove it right ?

Again, I personally don't mind it, but I don't think anyone should assume it's acceptable.

Who gives a sh1t about the damn flag.

Comn', it's a stupid ass flag. more than 1/2 the people who live in this country really just consider patriotism to be a fad. They just put on a act when it's the 4th of July, or some terrorist flies into a building.

She should have walked up to the door and asked the homeowners if they would like a flag in the yard. If they said yes, give them the card, and stick the flag in the ground sans card. If no, wish them a happy fourth anyway.

Anyway, she's out doing this today and some nutjob busybody comes along and starts yelling at her telling her she is denegrating the flag and she's littering and she's going to call the cops on her. My wife politely offered to take her off her list and not market her house in the future but apparently that's not good enough.

Great. Why do we always get the whackos???

She's had quite a bit of positive feedback from other residents in the past when she's done this, I don't see what the big deal is.

Update: We plan on rethinking this for future years. Probably won't do it again next year or if we do we will omit the business cards.

Neighbor is still a dumbass for yelling at my wife though (BTW-this woman does not live on our street and we don't really know her-she's a few blocks away) .

unfortunately, there are wackos everywhere, and chances are you will run into one sooner than later.

i wouldn't let that stop what you are doing. just omit her.

First, if someone was to put one in my lawn I would like it
Second, if they put something in mailboxes self addressed or on doors asking for permission saying "check mark here if you'd like to receive a free flag" I would be fine with that and would participate.

Does she leave flyers on people's windshields and doorknobs, too? Nobody wants people putting advertsiing all over thier property, whether it has a flag or not.

I have to agree with notfred here. If you put an American flag up, why do you need to advertise?

Your wife is smart and found another way to market/advertise utilizing our patriotism so that others wouldn't complain.

However, it truly is undermining the integrity of the flag. It should NEVER be used as a form of advertisement like your wife is doing. She's lucky she didn't get a bullet from my gun.

Don't use the American flag to advertise or for marketing in any way. I know that stores love to flaunt the flag in hopes of projecting an image of patriotism and to make people feel better about shopping in their stores but, it's wrong IMHO. Once you (or your wife) attaches something like a business card to it, it has been desecrated. This shows a lack of respect.

Let me clarify, NO country's flag should be used in profit making. This is simply desecrating it.

I really don't give a rat's ass about desecrating the flag quite frankly.

I just don't want to alienate any potential clients.

Did they lock up his wife yet?

Should at least spend 4th of July weekend in Jail for that remark and attitude.

same here.

one thing I hate about a business is when they get too pushy and invade my private space trying to promote or sell stuff.

If I want something then I'll go out and research and purchase. radio is good advertisement and local cable tv. then signage, billboards, etc. there are other ways to advertise and not be so intrusive.

your wife does not work for a realty company does she? I only ask because in our area a real estate lady did the same exact thing. put little flags in every yard with a flier attached for her business. I do not mind it if the houses do not already have a flag flying, but mine does so I did not see any reasoning behind sticking one in the ground out by the road next to my mailbox :\

Am I the only one who thinks she's an idiot?

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME if you think she's not at fault. Sure the neighbor's delivery may have been in bad taste but putting flags with business cards on SOMEBODY ELSE'S PRIVATE property?

Wow. Just. Wow.

Without reading any post except the original I can just guess that this is another Realtor littering the neighborhood trying to drum up business. This is not original, it happens everywhere and is quite annoying, flag or not. I won't get into the whole ordeal about how Realtors are useless drains on society because........

Well, of course it is marketing...She isn't just doing this out of the kindness of her heart, she wants to sell houses but I don't see that this is a big deal. Fvck, all kinds of businesses run these big patriotic ad campaigns with the American flag on it for 4th of July weekend. They are clearly using the holiday to make money. Do you people boycott those businesses because they are using the flag and this holiday to try to make money?

Your wife was in the wrong. Deal with it. She was spamming people's property and using the flag in a technically illegal manner.

While I'm not one to call the cops on someone for something like this, you shouldn't be complaining when she was in the wrong.

It's not illegal. She also passes out pumpkins on Halloween to all the houses in our area.

Most people actually appreciate it.

I'm not sure if it's illegal or not, but some similar things are illegal. It's not legal for someone in military uniform to sell anything.

edit: i read it wrong... but persons in military uniform have sold lifetime experiences... btw what does military uniform have nething to do with the situation?

edit: i think the OP gets the point.. no need to repeat the rest...

your wife is a spammer and you're candy coating it by using the american flag. I wouldn't appreciate it either

I don't think I would like some stanger to come plant things on my property. However, the solution your wife offered was good enough (and the cards on the flags were a thing of courtesy also).

Your wife is a spammer. What she's doing is unethical at best. Probably illegal too (trespessing, violating Green River Ordinances, etc...)

I can see it now, 90% of people will not take them down now but let them fall and lay at the side of the road. After all, it is not their property and they didn't put it there.

At least that is what it looks like my neighbors are going to do. I brought mine in from the side of the road, but thats it. all others are still out there, and probably 5-7 are laying down (been blown over by cars going by)

JulesMaximus, I hope your wife has enough respect to go back out now and take the ones down that are still up, or at least pick up the ones she finds fallen over.

If it only has a greeting on it , I can accept it. Nothing wrong with putting your name out there. If it has a businees card on it , don't put one on my property. I would rather see the greeting printed on the wood than have a card attached though. I think the card hanging from it would be pretty tacky.
