1680x1050 demands what?

I have the option of buying a new card. I'd like to spend $150 (used perhaps) and have a 1680x1050 monitor. I have a 4850 which I am selling to a friend who needs one and can get a new card. So, what's something that will not be dropping in price drastically, or is it best to wait some?

If you can wait 6 months you can get one of the 40nm DX11 cards. I am thinking of doing this myself and combining it with Windows 7 but then again I may also buy HD4770 as a stop gap and wait for DX11/Windows 7 to mature.

With respect to those 40nm Dx11 cards they might be pretty strong. In fact, I am wondering if HD58xx doesn't have at least 1280 stream processors and maybe as many as 1600 stream processors.<----Compared to that anything you can buy now will be like a splitting hairs difference.

Eh, just get the best current hardware your budget allows. There is ALWAYS something new just around the corner. If you buy a good card now, it will last you quite a while. IMHO it is foolish to wait for something that may come out in six months, in that time there will be more new product announcements and you end up waiting again.

That is only doable for that specific Galaxy model.

Oh hm. Well is it worth it to 'wait out' the next generation of cards by buying a cheap card?

Waiting is always a stupid argument. So lets play games like crap because there will be a new generation of cards in December 2009. Great!!!

If you have the money to throw on a 4870 1gb/gtx 260 c216 or 4890/gtx 275, then go for it and play all your games maxed out, until the shinny new dx 11 cards or whatever, will arrive. Then you can sell this one and get one of those. But until then, you'll be playing everything with all eye candy on. I don't think there is anything wrong in that.

I went from a 7900GS OC to a GTX 260 (216) and couldn't be happier...at its price point it cannot be beat...I'm using an HP 22" screen at 1680x1050...I haven't had a chance to try a lot of games but I can tell you I can play Dead Space and FEAR 2 at that res with everything at max including 4x AA/16x AF and it stays at 50-60fps even in firefights...

I don't think these cards will drop much in price in the near future...there is not much farther to go (maybe $20-30 over the next 6 months but why wait for that?)

Dead Space is the least demanding game to come out in years and even an 8600gt can play that game maxed out. heck I probably average 120 fps or so at 1920 with a gtx260. even FEAR 2 is not a demanding game at all compared to games like Far Cry 2 and Crysis.

Why are you getting rid of your 4850 and selling it to your friend when he can just get a 4850 himself? It's a fine card. If you want to move up, you can look for a good deal on a 4870 1GB... it's a nice step up and still isn't too expensive.

i'd say keep your 4850 until dx11 for 1680x1050. 4850 should have no problems at that resolution anyway. 4870 or GTX 260 is only marginally faster. You won't notice much.
