I just had a GPU go down. It started throwing bad WUs, and continued wherever I put it. So, my output is going to drop.
One of my better cards too. (2080ti)
Color me steamed, as if it isn't hot enough around here.

If someone on the moonshot gang can pitch in a little extra it would be nice. Or maybe one of the Marauders is feeling generous.

We need a "Sad" like-ability.

I think I am going to need some help to stay in the game. Maybe froze the teams too early ? Thats a big difference.

Well, PG/Genefer and F@H/Openmm_22/Gromax are a whole different kettle of fish. Let's see how we do at the latter.

As for my own input: Next week, nightly temperatures are supposed to fall below freezing point, and the week after that they may fall a few degrees further. Nothing serious, but it will make me hesitate to keep windows open. But with closed windows, I can't run as much as I did during the PG challenge and still now, by far.

Well, I had a few hours disruption.... So I got a new xfi Xfinity gateway. It was supposed to be faster and free. So I put it in. Little did I know it would be a nightmare to setup. And I was off-line for hours, and IP addresses changed, and units corrupted.

Well, I am back, but who knows how much production suffered. I also am now using the new power strip, so I might be able to do more !

Another observation about CPU folding:
Back in the days of the A7 core, CPU workunits were really small and very quick on large CPUs, *far* quicker than any GPU workunits.
In contrast, the current workunits for A8 core does not only have highly variable run times and PPD, they are also very large for CPU workunits. Sometimes their run times exceed a day even on 64-threaded CPU slots.

I wanted to research whether it's possible to ensure reception of A7 work. However, none of the workservers which carry A7 work is in 'Assign' status. :-(

PS, right at this minute, ¼ of my PPD are from CPU slots.
PPD/Watt is of course terrible in comparison to GPU folding.

Wow, thank you, @biodoc

What an exciting race, and what an unparalleled comeback of the Moonshot Gang At this rate, they'll catch us in ~4 days! Time to unpack the BFG 9000 and paint the room red Unfortunately, I have no chance of doing anything like that, my most powerful GPU is already almost 7 years old And everything else is just too old...* So, that leaves our secret weapon, @Assimilator1's cheering gerbils Hopefully, they are well-fed so they can now start cheering 24/7 I guess, we're in desperate need for that

* Oh, can a Voodoo5 6000 fold? Maybe it can add 0.5 PPD But even if it could, I guess the race would be finished before it would report it's first WU

If you ever find some quiet time plus feel motivated to look into your network's internals, I would recommend looking into static leases (if you use DHCP) or static IP addresses for all your hosts. This would eliminate most of the issues you're describing.
See here: http://www.portvapes.co.uk/?id=Latest-exam-1Z0-876-Dumps&exid=thread...race-has-started.2599137/page-5#post-40646526

Also, maybe you could start "subnetting" in order to separate the essentials (infrastructure devices like router and managed switches) from the clients, and then further split the clients into groups (i.e. subnets), like one subnet for your DC hosts, and one for your other devices. And then, if you ever decide to deploy fancy Wi-Fi stuff, then do it in a non-essential subnet first. Then you don't end up with so much collateral damage and stress.

If you're forced to use stuff like this Xfinity (whatever that is), it might be worth a try to put your DC hosts behind another router. That way, whatever you have to use on WAN from your provider doesn't interfere with your LAN. It just sees one client- your other router. This makes the whole endeavour of changing an ISP and their consumer grade hardware a less annoying thing. You just connect your router to their pseudo-router and wait for their DHCP to assign your router an IP. That's it, ISP changed, but your LAN never changes- never!

So, maybe you could try this first. Set up your entire LAN with a private router (and configure that router's WAN for DHCP so it requests an IP from your ISP's router), and then connect this router to your ISP's router. Combine this with static leases on your private router, and you no longer have any issues when the power blacks out or your ISP comes up with another fancy-pants consumer router.

I wonder if it would be fair to add just enough rented capacity to make up for my deficit during the PG challenge?
I have that figure as ~35.5 M, not 94 M...

There do not seem to be any concise rules, so I would think fair is whatever you consider to be fair. I personally have no issues with anybody renting hardware.

FWIW my points are all produced by my own hardware.. I have enough trouble trying to get FAH running on my own machines(it seems like way more of an issue than BOINC and I'm ecstatic when it works on the third reboot ) - I don't have any interest in attempting it on a cloud instance. I'm probably shooting myself in the foot since you're on the other team, but -

Sounds good to me, we are loosing a lot every day !

Also, as someone said, I was making 2 million a day at PG, and the 2 cards are now doing 12 million ppd, so its not even close as to the points you make there. I missed 120 million points doing PG, and I have no way to make it up. Money is maxed, so I can't rent hardware either. I spent $3000 between the 2 cards, and hardware to support them, so I am broke (not counting the super high $750 electric bill).

Ever consider selling off any of your old hardware that isn’t worth turning on for you? Could help recoup the cost of the newest cards anyway.

in my own search for new hardware, microcenter had multiple 3090s listed for sale in Friday. I figured I would grab one today and there was no way they would sell them all today. How wrong I was…

I’m considering buying a 6900XT since they are actually available, but I’m not terribly happy with my 6700XT when it comes to folding. Pretty sure i would regret doubling down on AMD at this point in the product cycle.

The old cards (1060,1070TI) that I don't turn on are the only video card I have for those systems. The 1070TI is in my "work" pc, a 2970wx that crunches WCG 24/7. The other one is a E5-2683v3 running 24/7, and I can't sell that CPU for even $100, so I am keeping it for now.

Everything else is running now, except one 2060 that's in a 2990wx, that I can't turn on due to power limits, but will use it later when things calm down. (January)

Have you tried turning down the power usage cap on that GPU? It might work again, slower. I find that if I let my 1060 get above 70C it starts throwing errors.

Well, some of your alternatives were to stay all-in in F@h and either skip PG or exclusively rent for PG. Considering the latter option, the only 'unfair' aspect of renting some after the fact to make up for the PG-induced F@h deficit would be that you can decide on this and implement it ad hoc, without prior planning.

[ Back in the days, we could walk into a computer shop, decide on a whim to shove some bills over the counter, walk home with one or another box with that alluring fresh-from-the-factory smell, plug it all together, and suddenly have bigger F@h PPD. When was this again? Must have been before the war. — Yep, now I remember, it was before (and early into) our legendary winter war against the Bronies. ;-) ]

There do not seem to be any concise rules, so I would think fair is whatever you consider to be fair.
A forum search shows some rules last posted ahead of the 14th Annual Folding@Home Holiday Season Race. I am quoting just this one for future reference: ;-)

StefanR5R - xii5ku - 7.5 M - full month

I plan to align PPD with the heating requirements of the apartment, but for now I think these 7.5 M should fit.
So then I degraded that to 5 M during the 10 PG days, i.e. let down my fellow Moonshot Gangsters by 25 M.

But on Friday and Saturday, I made 22 M and 26 M, i.e. overshot my deficit by 8 M already. Well, our Gang obviously can use these 8 M, and some more of that... (Still, I am already winding it down a little for a better microclimate at home.)

Something like a Matrox card or a Radeon 5450 could be purchased for ~$20 for each of those machines if all you need is display output. You should be able to easily sell the 1070ti here for $350+ and the 1060 depending if it's a 3GB or 6GB card would sell pretty quickly at $200+. A 2060 would probably go for $400 or more in the current environment. (I'm conservative in my price estimates because the FS/T section of this forum doesn't have a lot of traffic. eBay would be higher of course)

Yep, tried that to no avail. But thanks for the suggestion.
It actually starts throwing errors immediately, even when it is stone cold.
