16X CD-R's? When can we expect these?

Anyone have a clue? I remember reading somewhere a while ago that a company has created a chipset for 16X burning, but can't remember who. I bought my 8X Plextor about 1.5 years ago when they were brand new and have decided to hold out till the 16's, but I am getting restless!

So you can burn a CD in 4 min not 6?

6min burn time is good for me on a 12x, but it's nice to see plextor has bumped up RW burn speed

I can live with my $150 S&F 12x4x32 for now

I Love my Plextor 8x20! But what I think is going on with Xtremist is why Have a Callilac when you could drive a Corvette.. Everyone in here loves to stay on top of new Hardware. That what makes it fun.
Paulson are you the type of guy the drives in the right lane allll the time? J/K!!

Gunbuster,

I do a lot of mass recording actually and the difference between 4 min and 6 min when burning at least 50 cd's is that I save almost 2 hours. So yeah, I'd much rather buy a 16x than a 12x. I know they're both really fast, and if I was just burning an occasional music cd I couldn't care less about those 2 extra minutes. But a lot of the time, a friend of mine will pay me to help him burn cd's for his clients that he needs ASAP and I get paid per cd, not per hour. So if I could shave 2-4 hours and boost my $$$/hr, I'm gonna do it

LBM1A is right too though When I first got my 8x, NO ONE had them. Now everyone has 8x and 12x and I don't feel special anymore Makes me feel like spending that $500 on it back then was a waste, but not really though

So no one knows when we can expect these things??? Cheers!

<EDIT>Actually I can't remember if it was $500 or not. I know I ended up paying ~$700 for the Plextor 8/20 and an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller. They've dropped significantly since then </EDIT>

there has been no news of a 16x drive. as far as burning at 16x, a single chipset is not going to do anything.

and since there has been slower than 12x rated discs that can burn fine at 12x, you can bet your a$$ that some discs can be used at 16x if such a drive exists without being labeled at 16x discs.

Mday,

Oh!!! Thanx for clearing that up for me. I thought I could just put the chip on one side of my blanks and spin it around on my finger and voila!

I'm aware that a chipset capable of it is not gonna pump out cd's for me. Just like the BX chipset alone won't do jack... But now that there's the means, when will there be the way? Does that make sense?

I don't think I understand you really... Sorry.

And for the disks not having to be rated for that speed, I had lots of experience with that. I don't remember 8x rated cd's hitting stores till like last summer. I used 4 and 6x's for a long while Now I stick with Mitsui Silver Branded personally. Cheers!

Xtremist, if you're doing alot of mass-burns, and are really serious about it, plextor produce CD towers with five or so CD-R drives in there, capable of all burning at the same time. Just a thought. You should be able to find more information on their website.

As for 16x drives, I'm not aware of any anouncements at all, though it wouldn't surprise me at all if plextor launched a speedier (>12x10x32) scsi drive in the next few months. (that seems to be their pattern of drive launches)

M,

I hope you're right. I should change the topic to 16X Plextor cuz my experience with them is A+. Besides, they had the first 12X's and as far as I know same case with 8X. So it wouldn't surprise me if they release 16's first as well

About the mass burning. I've considered buying a tower. The quantity per mass-burn justify's it, however the frequency of mass-burns hasn't yet. Hope I said that right I only do huge (100+) burns about 2-4 times a year and so even though owning one would be sweet, spending the entire amount I'd make in a year doing it, doesn't justify it. If I did more of them, of course I'd get one, but I'd need to probably double the frequency. I only mass-burn for a friend of mine when he needs to meet a deadline and has decided to cut it VERY close. In those instances, burning twice as fast would be very very nice. The last one we did lasted 11 straight hours of burning! That's how close the deadline was. I did it for 6 hours and paid my little brother to do the remaining 5. If I could cut that number into 5-6 hours TOTAL, I can justify buying an expensive new cd-r.

I DO hope Plextor has something around the corner though Cheers!

A little update for those who care. Which should be everyone with less than a 12X CD-R I e-mailed Plextor sales since that's the brand I will purchase/wait for. Of course, as far as I know, they released the first 8 and 12X CD-R's anyway, so I imagine they'll be one of the first. Here's an e-mail I received back:

>Hello,
>
>Though 16x is most likely the next step up from 12x, we have not yet >seen this done successfully/reliably. If we do come out with a 16x >drive, it won't be until next year.
>
>Plextor Sales

Guess I'm outta luck for a while Oh well...

One problem with CD burners with burning speeds faster than 8X is there's hardly any CDROM drives available that do DAE faster than 10X or so. Sure you can image to the HD but this takes time which makes it kind of pointless to have a faster burner. - M.

Yes, I guess that would be a downside IF I did any DAE I wouldn't consider slower DAE a "downside" to burners or a reason not to make faster ones.
