I've been bitter that I've missed the last couple deals at newegg but this one I jumped on like a raving lunatic.

They've got this burner on neweggs refurb area for 65 dollars shipped, this price is down below anything you'll find on pricewatch for something with burnproof.
Its a 16x 10x 40x Lite-On, not a bad drive at all. Grab yerself a copy of nero and you'll be all set!!!

Check here for the link at newegg.
They've also got 12x burners for 10 bucks less-lets see how long these last.

Also, how do you check how much stock is available at neweggs site? This has been driving me crazy.

I've gotten a few "refurbished" items from newegg-and haven't had a problem. You still have a 30 day warrenty, which for
CD-RW drives is more than enough to see if anything is wrong. Also, they have an aopen 12x burner with nero for 65 shipped too.

The closest you'll come to this new is 87 bucks shipped....

If the difference between the refurbished drive and a new, full-warranty drive is only $22, I'd say that's $22 well spent. Why even take a chance on the refurb?

And the notion that nothing is likely to go wrong after 30 days is a bit silly. With drives with moving parts (hard drives, CD burners), most of your problems are going to come later, not right away. Spend $22 and protect yourself.

Aren't most refurbs as good as new? I have never had an experience with a refurb product that made me think them not a good deal.

Refurb's are sometimes as good as new, yes. But I wouldn't touch them without the original mfgr warranty. 30 days is worthless.

Since you guys are all so smart and blast him for what I consider a good deal. Have you ever tried to claim your warranty with a CDR company? Well I have... and lets just put it this way.... I tossed the drive after spending too much money on toll calls and unfriendly support staff. For 60$ it's not worth my time or money to run after a company that doesn't appriciate me. I just won't purchase their product anymore.

So cut the man some slack and conratulate him for finding a good deal! And 60$ for a working 16x burner that I think is full clonecd compatible... IS A GOOD DEAL!

Thanks, I picked up a couple. With the exception of an EPoX mb which went "poof" when powered up, Newegg's refurbs appear to me to be "Open Box" merch by and large. RMA'd the mb with no hassle at all. You should see the CyberVision refurbed 17" monitor we received Tuesday - immaculate condition, great image and $84.00 delivered to my door in three days! Way cool.

Buy On!

Exactly what is a "refurbished" computer part. If it's anything like a rebuilt auto part then I'd avoid like the plague.

Refurbished can mean many things.
1) This is the best one - Someone buys one and returns it because of something besides a drive failure. The manufacturer tests it and recertifies it, but because it's been opened it's now refurbished.
2) They usually will just fix it and sell it as new - The drive dies during testing in the factory (if lite-on or it's manufacturer even does this), they fix it and sell it as a refurb.
3) This is most common - Someone owns one for anytime during the warranty period and it dies. The manufacturer because of turnaround times just sends the owner a replacement and repairs their drive when they get around to it. When they have a few of these lying around, they'll sell them to a place like Newegg.
4) This happens a lot too - A person buys the drive from a place like Newegg and returns it for whatever reason. If for some reason they seller can't send it back to the manufacturer (the seller has it fixed) or there is nothing wrong with the drive besides being opened they will turn around and sell them as refurbished.

Refurbished drives are pot luck. Sometimes you get a good drive that may be as good as new, or sometimes you get a real turkey that will fail a few month after the very short refurbished warranty.
If your the kind of person who considers extended warranties on high wear items then you'll probably want new. Otherwise...

I'd do it. You have to figure that a refurb has been recertified, whereas a new one still hasn't been "tested". If I didn't already have a 12x, I'd go for it.

I was checking out the fine print on my AMEX Blue card. . .it doesn't look like it covers refurb, etc. . .just new products. Correct me if I am wrong.
