Deleted the contents because some people are just too stupid to reason with...

For the record - The drives were kept in exceptionally well vented computers (with at least 2" above and below the drive) with no prior failures and one died with a 120mm panaflo fan blowing directly on it (as per seagate's suggestion - well they said to aim a house fan at it and xfer all data).

They weren't under water or in an oven.

Right, I love Seagate - they do make very good drives, this one is bad though. I just thought I'd give people a heads up in case they are using this as a primary drive to back up. I'm not sworn off Seagate - like you say, they all have their lemons. So, this one can die without warning, it's a known issue, and hopefully you run the test and you're ok.

If I only had ONE die, I'd never mention it, but 4/5 is a really bad sign. So, test your drive. I hate hearing the "I wish I backed up my drive" stories.

thnx for hds up
there are 2 thrds about the .8's here somewhere
the .9's are no great shake either
guess I'll stick with the sevens for a while.
Based on the IBM deathstar and the lawsuits, I'm amazed someone at seagaye would admit to a problem

Is this ONLY the PATA drives? I've got a 7200.8 300GB SATA drive here in a removable enclosure. No problems with it though.

That would probably explain why my 300GB Seagate was giviing me problems. I almost lost an entire english paper because of HDD problems. If it wasn't too late I would return it and just get a smaller, cheaper HDD (although I got a good deal on it, 150 up front, 110 AR)

of course, one must remeber that seagate is the largest HDD manuf in the world
sold 200,000,000 drives last year
however they are now being asembled in china - so that makes me a little nervous.

Making them in China should make you a little more wary but it's all about how you want your goods spec'ed. China can make products to rival the best stuff in the world, however, you lose out on any manufactoring savings when you do this. Just remember that at one time, people were saying the same things for goods manufactored in Japan, Taiwan and Korea.

running a 7200rpm drive without cooling is asking for trouble in my opinion,i always had a fan cooling my hd's for years and NEVER had any problems with my hard drives.

Heat is a hd's worse enemy.

I've never had a fan cooling any of my hard drives and I've never had any trouble either. My previous P4 machine had 2 7200RPM drives in RAID0, 2 more 7200RPM HDs, and one CD-RW, and I still hadn't had any problems. Consider myself lucky?

Yeah, that's a tad extreme. HDD's are not designed to require active cooling (spec max aboot 60C). I think magnetic fields, electrical discharges, shock, and prolly a few other things are worse enemies than a few degrees above normal ambient temperature.

Every major hd manufacturer has factories in China cranking out drives for a while now. Quality shouldn't be an big issue.

And I have to agree on active cooling for 7200rpm drives. I had problems with a 7200.7 drive which is supposed to be very reliable.

If you own enough differnet brands, for long enough, you go through the "Brand X, Y, and Z" all SUCK! stage. Because all drives eventually fail.

Then you realize that they all have good and bad drives.

I have 2 of them (IDE) running just fine in raid 1, and another SATA waiting for me to put it in.

If you've killed 4 drives, that is clearly no coincidence. You must have some cooling issues in your computer.

I have 7 hard drives in my computer and no problems... although mine are properly cooled.

Do you have any fans in your computer???

Wrong conclusion. I have a total of 8 different drives spread out in different systems. Many were 300GB seagates. All the drives have the same excellent external enclosure,

Venus case

It isn't the enclosure - its the drive. The guy I spoke with at Seagate said they were FLOODED with calls about this drive and identified the problem (the SMOOTH chip). You cannot get better cooling than that enclosure - trust me, its the drive. The telltale sign is that the drives wobble a bit. The good seagates (I have a few) have zero wobble and the enclosures are cool to the touch. The bad ones vibrate a bit and are warm to the touch.

have both the 300GB 7200.8 pata and sata versions, both get regular use, both are Frys(Outpost) Specials, and both show no signs of having issues. Both are actively cooled, though, as are all of my HD's.

If the chip is the supposed source of failures then how is it correlated to a wobble? Sounds like either two independently defective components which conceivably may have been exclusively paired during assembly of a certain series, or the hot chip is the symptom of the other defective part (motor or such).
