Whattya think... 6400 upgrade material? Why does a drive get refurbed anyway? Any way to make this deal sweeter?

Anybody know the WD model # for this drive?

Will it work with my Adaptec 2940UW controller? I think mine is just a 64pin..

This is probably the Enterprise SCSI hard drive. 1" (standard
like IDE drive) height, good access times.

Someone ordered a refurb of this drive a week or so ago and
received a new-in-antistatic-bag version. Your mileage may vary.

I ordered a few of these drives and had some out-of-the-box
failures, but they (at least the non refurbs) come with a multi-year
WD warranty.

Look for another thread...

9ms seek time? No joke, even modern IDE drive can do better than that. Besides, as someone in this forum previously mentioned that when other refurbished stuff goes bad you just throw it away, but when a refurbished drive goes bad all your data is corrupted and gone.

Great price, but they make NO mention of a warranty. Does this mean that if it dies 2 weeks or 6 months later I'm left holding the bag?

I think the seek time listed is wrong...A 10K SCSI drive with
a 9ms seek time? I don't think so...This drive has the same
part number (with a "R(efurbished)" at the end as the
Enterprise 10K SCSI drives they sold last week had...Those are
very fast drives...Less than half the listed seek time. So
I think that's a typo...

Heres what I found on WD's site

HD 1
Width/Height
RPM
Interface
Average Read Seek

3.5-inch/low profile 10,000 Ultra / Ultra2 SCSI 6.6 ms

HD 2
Width/Height
RPM
Interface
Average Read Seek

3.5-inch/low profile 10,000 Ultra / Ultra2 (LVD) / Ultra160 SCSI <5.2 ms

Those are the only two drives they make 10k rpm, 18gb, and scsi.

Forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't this be a really good fit for the 6400 servers we all are waiting for?

According to WD site it is a very nice drive.....

This drive is fine for the 6400, except you need to buy
an 80->68 pin LVD adaptor. About $13-20.

80->68 pin converter has connections for both the 68pin SCSI
cable and a standard 4-pin molex power connector (as well as
jumpers for drive ID and whatnot).

So the consensus on this is if you buy this drive and it dies later on, there is no warranty. Am I correct? Or can someone verify that either Tiger Direct or WD will back these recertified drives with a warranty? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Hard to say what the warranty is. Western Digital has a warranty
status engine on their Web Site that you can use once you know
the serial number of your drive...

I got some of the non-refurbished drives last week, and they
have about 4 years left on the Warranty...I have no idea about
these drives...

Speaking of all this, can anyone suggest a good thorough DOS-based
program for testing *SCSI* hard drives. Something that really
puts them through the paces and checks for any errors/potential
problems? Western Digital doesn't offer one, and the programs
from other manufacturers aren't that good for drives other
than their own.

Spoke with a TD rep - 30 day exchange for replacement or equivalent, no cash back; Also 1 year WD warranty applies.

Any chance anybody can link to the right 80-68 adaptor?

if I could afford it, I'd pick up 4 of 'em, 1 to go into my SCA backplane, and 3 to use up the extra adapters I have.
Good deal, if you can afford it, jump on it.

Besides, as someone in this forum previously mentioned that when other refurbished stuff goes bad you just throw it away, but when a refurbished drive goes bad all your data is corrupted and gone.

I don't see how this is any different than when a new drive goes bad, as your data is corrupted and gone as well. Granted, the chances of it happening are smaller, but still non-zero. We are assuming the case that you have no good backups here (since if you do, then both of the above scenarios no longer hold true).

According to the online status, my order shipped; according to the rep, he had no idea what's going on or what kind of drives these are.

We shall see.

BTW Western Digital got out of teh SCSI market about a year ago and just dumped all of their remaining stock into the channel. Kinda like Micropolis did a few years back. They did say when they did it that they were going to back all of their drives warranty (5 years for a new drive) but can't say on these especially since they are coming out so long after the discontinuation.
