Bought the $78 XP1800 retail box this morning. Consider it a better deal than the $69 because it has a 3 year warranty and comes with the heatsink and fan (normally $8 or $9 additional for the EOM). Picked up the ECS K7S5A for the sale price of $56 for a total of $134 no shipping or handling charges FED EX Super Shipping.
Have been following this post and it had a large part in my decision. Thanks to all!!

Yes, I agree, better to spend $ on larger hard drive or better video card than to go over 1800+ if you're buying the K7S5A.
I guess your other options were:

1. Saving around $11 and going for the retail 1700+.

2. Saving $20 and going for the $52 1600+ (separate purchase of heatsink+fan)
Cons: No 3 year warranty, slightly slower MHz,
Pros: Quality Heatsink+Fan to enable a possible easy overclock to 1700+ maybe even approach the 1800 without too much trouble.

In support of Chuck2, popping it in without overclocking worries and with the 3 year warranty piece of mind may well be worth $10-$15 in the long run.

Now if you can wait, $wise, I'd allocate the saved money from buying a cheaper CPU to a m-board that can support 333FSB so you can upgrade the CPU one day when the prices go down for the $350+ 2700+. If that simple nForce2 m-board (that even supports 400 FSB AMD Bartons) goes down from around $100, it may be worth considering.

As this may be a while Chuck2 probably made the right choice since having to use a fast computer, even for two-three weeks is worth at least $20.

Only thing... is the fact that the stock AMD heatsink and fan are horrible and really LOUD!!!

Hey JonnyBalls enable your Private Messaging.
I've never oveclocked a CPU and consequently never bought an OEM CPU.
Correct me here, pls: I thought that AMD retail heatsink and fan are adequate if you're not going to OC. I also thought it was common knowledge that almost every non-retail Fan is better but that virtually all are louder than retail Fans.

The reason why I didn't OC was because I'd like to keep my computer on all the time and it's where we sleep so in order to get any noticable increase in MHz, I thought you would have to go a lot louder than retail AMD fan.

(In addition to the noise, I also thought it's easier to invest $10-$20 and buy higher rated AMD CPU than investing in quality heatsink & fan and bother with overclocking from scratch and spend even just a few hours dealing with it.)

Hey!c627627 I am just trying to build a computer under $150 and so far this is what I have:
Compaq FS740 (original retail $449) Sears Deal $90. with a $150 Rebate
Case with USB front $31.
Memory Staple PNY 2 512 PC133 $90.34 a $100 Rebate
Keyboard and Optical Mouse $14.94 a $10. Rebate
Modem 56K .92 $20. a $20. Rebate
Motherboard K7S5a $56. On Sale
XP1800 CPU $78
Lite On 48-24-48 CD R/W $79.95 a $50. Rebate +coupon
$460.23 $330

So far according to my calculations I am into this system $130.23 and my last system with a KK266R ended up with a $640 price tag without the monitor. All of these items were posted at one time or another on this forum!!! One
other thing in the 4 years of rebates I have never failed to collect any.

im thinking of jumping on it too although with my asus a7v133 it might not work
for me than the issue is whether it is better to get a new mb and maybe better cooling (any suggestions especially quiet solutions) and oh yea memory (so ie much more cost)
or just go with something else from scrap such as an intel setup since u can buy a dell for 500 that will work in the 2.4 ghz range (id add in all my other components except for the basic system and id do this option if dell had a decent mb)

Why the bleep is OCing the #1 determining factor to whether a proc deal is hot or not, followed by price?

i dont think oc alone is the only factor being considered here although it certainly is a strong factor....

for instance u dont see people talk about getting a 1900 or a 1700 since both would have very near performance at stock speeds. If u have a higher budget or dont enjoy the risks/rewards of OCing then this is probably not the chip for u.

Many folks can get these things near 2ghz without a lot of trouble and for some that provides both joy and cheap performance (although at a risk). You would get less OCing performance out of the 1700 although the 1900 would be the same (for more money)

Besides, currently at newegg the 1700 is only 2 bucks less and the 1900 is going for 89 bucks so now that i think about it, cost is what is the primary factor here and not OCing as u suggest

I currently have a T'Bird 1.33 (not overclocked) running on a KZT Turbo-R board. I can upgrade the BIOS such that a 1800+ AMD will work and am curious as to the "real life" performance boost that might be gained? I am not a huge gamer, more Internet/Office apps...

Thanks,

Howie

The 1700 is still 57(oem)/68(retail). Any substantial difference if I overclock?

I know that ...

May be I should have been clearer - I was asking for the difference and o/c success of the 1700+ relative to the 1800+. All tbreds are unlocked right?
