19" CRT

I know this topic has been done over a bit, but conclusions reached from the other threads don't quite apply (sadly).

After searching this forum and a few other forums for the past few days on best to go with, the obvious answer I see everywhere is the DP930SB. Well...thats not an option anymore:brokenheart:. Infact, I had ordered it from Dell (15% off and free shipping), and they just up and cancelled my order a few days ago without notifying me (wriggled a $100 coupon out of them for that). They don't carry them anymore, Newegg doesn't, any place that doesn't have them in stock won't be carrying them again.

Anyhow, seeing as I got this coupon, I'd like to put it to use on their site...preferably aiming for a 19" CRT as the title suggests, as because of the $100 off I got from them, I got swayed into putting that extra money to the vid card I have on the way (eVGA 6800 GT).

This link shows what my choices are for this.

For the most part, I've had it narrowed down to the NEC FE991SB and the Viewsonic P95f+. However, I've had a crap time trying to decide which to go with. I hear good things about them, and some pretty bad things.

I've been wanting to go with the NEC, as I see it tends to be recommended more often (even by Anand's Guide), but there's a few things holding me back with it...mainly what I've read of these having an early death, or just starting to crap out in general after a year or so. That worries me a bit, seeing as NEC has stopped production...I don't want to be stuck with a 50lb paperweight anytime soon.

The Viewsonic has also always been on the list of consideration. I haven't seen it mentioned quite to the extent of the NEC, but when this monitor gets bad reviews, people seem to be vehemently against it. Whether it be the blurry text aspect of it (though I gather the NEC probably suffers from that too), to just the production quality of it, I'm hesistant to go with this as well.

Finally yesterday a friend of mine told me to go with neither, if any on that page, the Viewsonic G90f. His main reason for this was the Aperture vs Shadowmask argument, as the grill lines with apertures annoy him to the point of trying to sway me away from those other two altogether. Another thing he told me to is to watch for monitors with TCO'99 at least, as anything less will fry my brain and eyes . That would auto rule out the NEC and leave just the Viewsonics, but I don't know how big the difference would be there.

I really haven't even considered anything else on the page, if anyone knows anything about the others (like Dell's offering being worth it), speak up by all means.

One last thing, as I've got this coupon, the most I'm really willing to spend is $300 after coupon, which may or may not open up other options (LCD or what). I just have a feeling the lower priced 17" LCDs wouldn't be ideal for gaming, and haven't put much consideration their way.

Any help would be mucho appreciated!

Love my 2111SB, and I like the picture for gaming on the AG monitors much better than shadow mask. (so I have a 19" Trinitron and the 22" NEC)

IMO the people who say they are bothered by the lines are the people justifying why they bought cheaper shadow mask tech. You rarely ever notice the lines.

I've pretty much settled with the idea of going with aperture, just hope some of these things can be cleared up a bit before I take the plunge.

The lines on 21" Trinitron CRT's disappear unless pointed out. It's hard to explain but they just do (especially if the user has ever had a trinitron screen). My personal opinion is if you are lookin for anything under 21" get an LCD. Even if it's just a 17".

I have been dealing with so many premature crt deaths (<5yrs use) lately with my clients I would be hesitant to recommend a CRT to anyone ... even a Viewsonic or Sony.

These LCDs are a fad- CRTs will be back!

I hear you, when my crts die, they'll be replaced by lcds. Last year the choice for me was 21' viewable for $600, or over $1000 for comparable lcd. Like a big monitor for gaming.

Shadowmasks ARE sharper. But they're just not as bright.
So if you favor sharpness over brightness, you could get the G90f. There's a reason why the shadowmasks were put in the graphic series of monitors.

Any comments about the monitors I posted?

When it comes to LCDs, the only ones that I'd be able to consider are the sub-$400 screens here and I have no idea if any of these would be a worthy gaming display, or where to look to find out about this.

I've been using a laptop the past few years, and the colors aren't up to snuff with what I'd like on the screen, and wouldn't want that to be an issue if I went for one of those. In addition to ghosting, and all those fun things that make CRTs so appealing.

This is starting to interest me. Does anyone have any experience gaming with this thing? From what I've read so far, it seems like it wouldn't be too bad of a choice.

I talked to nec about the 930 discontinued rumors.

Mitzi Garland: Hi RB! How may I help you?
RB: hi mitzi
RB: was the 930 discontinued?
Mitzi Garland: I don't think it has been discontinued, let me see if I can make sure.
RB: some have been saying that in forums, newegg and dell do not carry it now supposedly
Mitzi Garland: ok, I am not able to see it on the Dell site for sale either, but my supervisor did just say that it has not been discontinued. We may just currently be out of stock to the distribution channels at the moment
RB: I see, I thought it was strange that the best quality 19" monitor which is relatively new would be dc'd
Mitzi Garland: indeed
RB: I will post this then, thanks
Mitzi Garland: ok
Mitzi Garland: Thanks
Your session has ended. You may now close this window.

Hm well newegg doesn't say out of stock, it's just removed from the site completely.

From reading reviews on the FE991, it would seem that it has a very high failure rate...on forums people were saying it dies after a year. I just bought the G90fb from dell and it's decent I guess. I'm rmaing it though, it has a very slight haze to the image esp at 1280x1024. It's the best shadow mask out right now...I haven't had any geometry problems either. The main problem with shadow mask though is that when whites are displayed over blacks, it kind get's this weird white haze to it...it's a problem with every single sm design. It makes an great gaming monitor, the screen is not completely flat but it's close enough...you can only see the curve when it's off. It suffers though displaying small details...it's still better than any lcd screen out there though lol. Shadow mask just isn't a very good technolgy....the only real benefit is that it's easier on the eyes. I'd go for the P95F but be prepared to rma to get a good one. VS customer support is excellent so it shouldn't be a problem. My 2 cents.

I think I'm just going to go the LCD route now. Don't know how long those would take to get around, and this is my first desktop in a couple years...waiting is killing me.

Samsung 710T, although Dell's price is way high compared to Newegg...I have $100 coupon, but it basically gets nullified to $30 because of their gouging.

Anyone have any other recommendations for a 17" LCD? I haven't been able to dig up too much info at all about either Sony, Dell's or anyone elses thats on that page really. This is for gaming!

Contrary to what was posted earlier, this is an official response email from NEC/Mitsubishi:

Thank you for contacting NEC/Mitsubishi customer service & support
regarding your questions on the DP930SB-BK.

At this time, NEC/Mitsubishi Displays of America will be discontinuing
the Diamond Pro 930 series of monitors. This is why it is no longer
available in stores. We have not been told a definite end to 19" apperture
grill monitors, but for now they are being taken off the market.

If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us in
the future.

Sincerely,

David Roach

The aperture lines can only been easily seen if the screen is white.. otherwise it is largely unnoticable. It doesn't bother me a bit.. but YMMV so go see a demo set first!

FYI I'm using a FE991SB, and something is going funky with the tube. So far tech support response is within 24hrs and I'll see how well they'll handle my case

I have the G90f+b which is the black version of the one you want and I love it. I am running 1280*1024 at 85 Hz without a problem and it does 1600*1200 with ease at 75 Hz. Dont know about the other ones.

FYI, the NEC 930SB has reappeared and is currently listed on Amazon.com for $300.19.

My 19" NEC FE950 (made June 2000) started having a horizontal hold problem this summer. Monitor goes black as the image compresses to a white horizontal line across the middle of the screen.

Further bad news for CRT owners? I sent another email to NEC/Mitsubishi trying to verify the TCO standard '99 certification they list in the user manual for the 930SB (19") / Multisync 2141 (22") and here is the reply.

Thank you for contacting NEC/Mitsubishi. The web site may not list all
supported standards. The information in the manual should always be
accepted over information on the web site, so the 2070SB and 2141SB
models are TCO95/99 compliant.

However, we would like to make you aware that all CRT products are
being discontinued, not just the DP930SB.

Thank you
