HI
This is a repost of the one I did in the general hardware forum.

HI
I've been looking for a new 19 inch monitor. Not in a hurry to buy one, just more interested in replacing my very old Viewsonic 17 G monitor. I've had it over 5 years and it was used when I got it!
I'd love to buy a LCD monitor. BUT! When I look at them, expecially the text I see a lot of trailing edge shading on the letters. Now, my shopping and veiwing is limited to the local Best Buy and Circuit City and Comp USA stores. Because of the poor quality I've seen while looking at the LCD monitors in these stores I'm tempted to stay with a plain old CRT. Sadly not many CRT's left on the market and even less are carried in the local stores.
I've come up with these 2 monitors.
What are your thoughts.
Samsing 997 df
Veiwsonic A91F+
As I said before, I'm not in any hurry to buy. Mostly I'm interested in getting info and other opinions so I can make a good decision.
Thanks
Pghpooh

Not every gammer likes tftlcd and it will never be mainstream nor will plasma as the new nano tubes shallow crt (carbon) is due in 2006, wish i could find the newest full write up on it from 1-2 weeks ago, it was very good and not a flame post on tftlcd and plasma being crap but truths like plasma losing colours after few years of use.

Im used my 19" Flat CRt for 4years now and i see no point changing till these new Shallow tubes hit market, there is also some led screen that are used in mobile phones on show with bigger screens than avail before.

This is all i can find im google so far> http://www.meko.co.uk/fed.shtml

I can't imagine you'd be dissatisfied with either model. Viewsonic and Samsung both make superb CRT displays (as well as LCD).

I did find an awfully sweet deal at Newegg, the Iiyama Vision Master 1451. It's a flat screen 19" CRT priced at $136 plus $25 shipping:

Iiyama Vision Master 1451 at Newegg

This is a really nice, high quality display at an awfully good price. Iiyama built their reputation building top quality Apeture Grill CRTs based around Mitsubishi Diamondtron picture tubes throughout the 90s. The VM1451 isn't the nicest 19" CRT that Iiyama has ever sold, but it's still a very nice Shadow Mask CRT display and a great value for the money.

Ironic....how you claim to be the voice of truth while in the very same sentence speaking an untruth. Plasmas do not lose colors after a few years of use. That's a new urban myth that we'll need to add to the list.....next to other nonsense like plasmas needing to be recharged or plasmas having a short lifespan. If you were a plasma owner and performed the research you'd know better.

I got the Samsung 997DF-T/t off TechonWeb for $195 half a year ago and love it. It's a beautiful, crisp looking monitor. I only wish it had better refresh rates at 1600x1200+, but I don't game any higher than 1280x960 for now anyway. The only gripe I had with it was trying to set the geometry to be near perfect so it wouldn't bother the p1ss out of me while I gamed.

Hadsus, have you got a reading problem, thats not my article i never wrote it but i dont like lcd or plasma and it isnt myth about colours, all i said was he isnt blatenly flamming any of the techs.

The poster wants a CRT so doesnt need others questioning why he dont like lcd, its a free world (well is where i am)

LCD and Plasma will be overtaken by the new carob shallow tubes and or the leds screens, and i will buy whatever is best in 2006 sometime.

You dont need to own to know as i have plenty customers with all 3 screens and thats reason i wont buy as i see theirs, 99% of them loved the CRT apart from bulk.

You need go do bit of research i would say and realise that 2005 still isnt the year to cleam tflcd is as good as CRT allround.

Try 3dvideomans site, his sexy wife will tell you a good few reason why also, how they run CRT's still.

Quote a source that says plasmas lose their color over af few years....a reputable source. My problem with statements like yours is that they mislead and misinform people. Alot of people are interested in plasmas and they shouldn't be listening to people who like to pretend they are experts when they have no clue. You can start educating yourself with the Panny white paper discussing plasma myths:

Sorry, you'll have to find your adolescent smack talk fix with someone else. Your comment earlier claimed that color fade was a problem in plasmas after a few years and you've cited as a source pcworld talking about burn-in. Burn-in is an uneven aging of phosphors. You made up 'color fade'.....you cannot even find a reference to it. You've got to be trolling me 'cause no one can be this stupid on purpose. In any case, you're not going to waste another second of my time.

I'd definitely get the Samsung 997DF.
The V. A91F+ is only a 86KHz monitor, its refresh rates are too low for a modern 19" CRT.

IMO, only 95KHz (and better) CRTs are worth acquiring in the 19" category, they have a refresh rate of 100Hz at 1024x768, 1152x854, 1280x720 and 1600x900 and 85Hz at 1280x960.

Imho for high end CRT's the iiyama screens are the best, I suggest that you check them out (and see if they fall in your price category)

I used to give customers them for the cheaper systems i built but higher end ones got mitsubihi's (they make own tubes not many if any others do).

HI
Thanks for the replies. I would have replied to this sooner but I couldn't find my flack jacket!!
Some points were brought up such as the refresh rates and so on that I forgot about. When you buy or build once every 4 to 5 years I tend to forget all that stuff.
Once again, thanks for the info.
