Hey guys, First post, anyways ... I am slowly but surely looking at moving over to a 19" LCD from my LG Flatron 17". I have been reading reviews left right and center for the last week or so but my only problem is that its hard to find reviews on the specific models available in here in South Africa

So, i still have some questions:

1. Could you guys please give me you opinions on these:

BenQ sp91g+

LG L1950SQ-SN

LG L1917S-SN

Samsung 930bf-s ---> this one is the most expensive of the lot, maybe a bit to pricey for me sad.gif

Hanns-g TA191 ----> this one is the cheapest of the lot, the benQ is second cheapest

2. Could you guys also please suggest other brands/models I should be looking at, please keep in mind that I'm on a budget, so I'm not looking for the top of the range R10,000 monitors , im looking for a reeaally cheap 19" that doesn't completely suck

3. How much of a difference does the response time actually make? Would there be a HUGE difference between, lets say, a 12ms and a 8ms monitor?

I know that this topic does come up quite often, but I though I would start a new one due to the fact that monitors mentioned in other threads like these either aren't available in SA or are miles to expensive

Thank in advance, appreciate any help

I can't find anything about that specific BenQ model, but I've heard really great things about their monitors, especially later models.

I have a BenQ FP91g+ and its a very good budget monitor. Response time is fine for gaming, or just about anything else you want to do. It's not bad out of the box, but it took a bit of fiddling to get the picture brightness and contrast to my liking (mainly adjusting the gamma). It really is a very good LCD for the price.

Hi Twis

There is some good stuff available here, but it does tend to be a bit more expensive (though not in the R10 000 range)

What kind of price range are you looking at?

Cheers

Well, R2500, but I will only go that high if I find a monitor I am REALLY happy with.

im still looking around, I can get one of those LG's for R2500, they look really nice, but are lacking, 8ms, no DVI etc..

You need to tell us how you'll be using the monitor. If gaming, what types of games? FPS? RTS? Do you game competitively or just for leisure?

Or is it form multimedia purposes? Watching movies / dvds, etc. etc.

I think you'll be somewhat hard pressed to find anything really decent for under R2500. Looking at places like Digitalplanet and Computersonly, the cheapest stuff with DVI is over R3000 and it just goes up after that - a VX2025WM goes for R4500 from Prophecy (That's $700, just to let non-SAers know how much we suffer with computer prices)

Otherwise Incredible Connection (while normally hideously overpriced and underspecced) occasionally has good stuff on sale, but you migth have to wait awhile.

The only other advice I can give is take advantage of the seven day cooling-off period. You should be able to return any monitor you don't like with minimal charge within this time (just check the returns policy - I don't think stores are allowed to charge restocking fees but they can charge shipping/handling fees). This is unfortunately the only way you can really experience the higher end monitors that aren't sold and displayed at IC.

hey edcarman, I am probably going to get the monitor directly from a supplier, so I wont pay retail prices. That usually knocks off a couple of hundred ran, sometimes more
