I found a deal for a used Kimber Eclipse target 2 pistol for $840 USD it has night sights, wood grips, and minimal wear. The gun is in great shape inside and out. Do you think this is a great deal?

OR i can buy a new kimber entry level "custom" i believe its called for $700 new

what should i do?

Thats not a bad deal on the Eclipse, in excellent condition.

If you are really interested in the type and have the cash I would go for it.

Good deal on the Eclipse. I was researching Kimbers for about a month. Was about to pull the trigger (haha) but couldn't bring myself to spending a grand on a gun when I had so many other toys I wanted.

It's a good deal, if you like the 1911 I'd go for it. That's the one standard issue I don't like. To big for my tastes. Much rather have me a Sig Sauer.

With the owner, drive over to a known, competent pistol smith. Have him wait in the car. Take the piece in to have it inspected and appraised. Most Smiths will give you 5 minutes of their time and thats all it will take.

Most used handguns are like new and only suffer holster wear, a Kimber may have been used as a race gun in
competition. Nothing will hide from a decent gun smith's inspection. GL

I am not a big fan of the Eclipse aesthetic, but they are nice pistols. As far as mass-manufactured 1911s go, I think Springfields are a better value than Kimbers. I share Viper GTS' enthusiasm for the Para-Ordnance LDA trigger, which to me offers the best qualities of a 1911 and a Glock in one reasonably-priced package, but an LDA is not really a 1911, even if it looks like one.

Who still gets issued a 1911 45ACP?

ACK! No! Quantico modified the M1911A1 so that we didn't have to get the 9mm.

EDIT: I hate the M9, I won't use it...ever.

I have heard that Springfield has had some quality control issues as of late.

Commercial/competition grade ambidextrous safety, precision barrel, precise trigger, and rubber coated grips, rounded hammer spur, high profile combat sights, and an extra-wide grip safety for increased comfort and controllability (which aids in a quick follow-up second shot). Increased max effective range from 82ft to 142ft.

That's almost double... Wonder what he did to the barrel and chamber, if the cartridge is the same.

The Marines just basically upgraded theirs to a competition grade version. By virtue of their increased accuracy the effective range increases. These weapons have been a mainstay of competition pistol shooters since the early sixties. My Father has a pair of Colt match grade 1911 45s that he bought direct from the factory in the sixties and had shipped to a Gunsmith in Shreveport Louisiana to be modified for 50ft match competition. Don't remember the gunsmiths name right now but I will say those are two of the most accurate hanguns i have ever seen. My Dad won a nationals at Camp Perry in rapid fire with one of them when i was a kid. He doesn't shoot them much anymore gettin a little old now but he did pull one out for his Concealed carry shooting test a few months ago. The test required that you put 10 shots inside an 12" circle at 30 feet or something like that. He put his first five under a quarter and the state tropper told him to put the gun away he passed.

I would get it if you like it, not sure what the Eclipses run around here, haven't really looked at them. I have a Kimber Pro Carry HD II stainless that is my carry gun, paid $690. I also have a Para Ordnance 18.9 LDA 9mm, not a true 1911 but close.

dtyn, I"ve always considered the 1911's to be less bulky than Sigs , at least compared to the P228 I was looking at. I"ll have to look at them again...
