1950 Pro - fan noise level

How is the 1950 Pro in terms of fan noise level? Can it be modded with a different fan? Is there any need to do so, assuming it can be?

Just get the version that comes with the Zalman, or toss the stock HSF and put on a Zalman yourself. They are nearly silent and worth every single penny.

The Pro isn't nearly as bad as the XT which has the same cooler as the older X1900XT/XTX, but the reference HS/fan is still pretty loud... either the Gigabyte with the Zalman or the Asus model shold be a lot quieter.

I have a Zalman VF900-Cu - how does it compare to the VF700? If I get the ATI brand 1950Pro, how do I install the Zalman? I haven't done this before - willing to try.

The VF900 is much quieter than the VF700, which can get kind of loud on the higher fan speeds (subjective).

Yes, you can install your VF900 on the X1950Pro. Sapphire's Ultimate edition does just that if you want to save some time and warranty. It's not that difficult if you want to do it yourself.

I don't know about the base ATI version, but the ASUS version is pretty quiet below 50% fan and audible above that.

I don't know much about that brand, other than I've read mixed reivews on some of their other video cards. The one in the link has no customer reviews yet.

It's really not that hard. Just remove the 4 cross screws and then remove the other 4 and the whole casing comes off. You might want to get some AS5 or something similar instead of the stuff that Zalman ships.

I would recommend against the standard ATI one since you're paying 280 for the 256M version. The other brands use the exact same board, just different coolers and warranties. HIS is not bad. That IceQ3 card is generally considered to be solid in terms of noise as long as you turn down the fan speed. The advantage over some others is that it blows the hot air out the back.

The only one that seems faulty is the blue Sapphire one with the overheating VRMs that had to be fixed in the Ultimate Edition, and even then not everyone has had problems.
