You've seen the Retail 1GHz Tbird for $120?

The cheapest to be found on pricewatch is just under $180 - and that's the OEM from some fly-by-night reseller.

Man, whatever you're smoking.... give me some too!

Pricewatch rarely shows low prices anymore.
Here is a place that seems to always have cheap AMD's (NO, I don't work there).
Cheap AMD's
They list a 1GHz TBird in stock at $174.
But, that is not a very wise choice.
The TBird's do not overclock as easily as the Durons do.

The reason the TBirds do not overclock as well, is the same reason that they do perform so well. L2 Cache. 256k compared to 64k. It is harder to get more out of the 256k cache than it is the 64k cache. Also, this extra L2 cache means the TBird needs more core voltage than the Duron, thus limiting it a tad more. This subject has been out by most review sites, including Anandtech, Toms, and Sharky's. Most Duron 600's easily run 900 to 950, with some hitting 1Ghz. Most TBird's running 700-900 hit 950 to 1050. Upper limit for most any Duron (600+) is around 1Ghz (+/-). Upper limit for most any Tbird, (1Ghz or less) is around 1.1Ghz. So what is better a 1Ghz TBird at 1.1Ghz, or a 700 Duron at 1Ghz, at 1/3 the cost? Anand currently lists the Duron 700 and Abit KT7 as the best value choice.

Better choice is to get a Duron 700 at $53, and overclock it to 1GHz.
With the money saved, it's like getting a good motherboard such as the Abit KT7 ($129), for free.

Uh, both durons and tbirds overclock great. I have a duron 700 @ 900, tbird 900 @ 1.1ghz. Both 200mhz overclocks. And the blue cores overclock even better. Check overclockers.com database to see how high 1ghz chips go.

if you are going to say something like that, back it up with some info.

I would say you can get a AMD Athlon T-Bird 1000 MHz, MSI K7T Pro2-A Athlon 200 MHz Motherboard, Tai-sol (CEK733092) heatsink and ballbearing fan all put together and tested for $343.15 shipped.

You can get a 1Ghz T-bird wiht a Abit KT-7 for about $300 with a stock heatsink and you do have to pay shipping on top of that.
It will not bet one of the b
eat heatsinks but still it is about $300 with a good mother board.

Check Pricewatch for combos and there are some good deals out there.
