Is there any reason you'd want more than 4Gb on one of these?

Sure....considering these "netbooks" are actually capable of alot more than just browsing the net. I have a 64GB runcore on this particular machine with OS X installed. I was quite surprised at how well the OS X software runs on these.

3.5 minutes to boot? Uhh...really really doubtful. The post screen takes about 7 seconds if I remember right. There is plenty of bloatware on a dell machine straight from the factory but even still, 3.5 minute boot time is insane.

I want one to play with but my wife would kill me plus I really don't have use for another one. If I buy another toy this month I am going to have to find a new place to live.

Is there a significant advantage to running SSD vs HDs in these (power usage, durability?)? You can find them with 120Gb HDs pretty cheap...the 64Gb SSD is a $150 upgrade..

I'm tempted to get one at $199 and find a deal on RAM to bump it up a bit, then wait for SSDs to drop in price and upgrade it then...

i would probably want like 8 or 16gb at least really.

the runcore replacement mini-pci or other brand replacements on newegg are pretty cheap.

even better is to buy pulled ssds from other peoples mini 9s on ebay (who upgraded).

i think the ssds from the acer or asus netbooks work too.

the main gripe i'd have with the mini 9 is the keyboard layout is horrible. i suppose i'm just really easily annoyed, but i have had a lenovo and a msi wind and both have not quite standard keyboards (the lenovo worse by more) and it just drives me insane. the dell's keyboard is drastically non standard ... look atwhere the quote key is forexample.

You can install XP on a 4GB drive, but unless you do some tweaking there won't be a lot of free space left. An nLite install w/pagefile and recycle bin turned off is pretty frugal, though (easily less than 1GB).

As far as bootup times, the default Ubuntu install is pretty slow, probably thanks to the slower MLC SSD. Definitely not 3.5 min, but maybe like 1-1.5 min IIRC. I replaced the default Ubuntu install shortly after receiving my Mini 9.

Great little netbook for the price. I got mine like a month ago from the Dell Outlet and it was $240 w/20% off.

Couple things I will mention...

The 32 and 64GB Runcore drives are the fastest drives available for the mini 9. This is in terms of read and write performance. Anything else pretty much sucks even worse than the stock driver.....The killer on the stock drive is the write speed, 15mbps I believe with the read speed being around 70mbps. The runcores will reach about the same read speed but can more than double the write speeds making them fairly fast.

The drives from the factory will come with compression enabled on the drive. Not exactly great for performance but it helps save room. On my 16GB I disabled compression, disabled hibernation, and disabled page swap and told it to use memory only with 2GB of ram. This will free up some space and make the system perform better, but when you disable drive compression you are going to probably take up a little more than you freed up if I remember right.

If you have a valid XP Pro key I would check into TinyXP....my wife has it installed on her 4GB mini and she gets by pretty good with about 2GB of room left. I have a 32GB runcore on the way to replace the stock drive so she has some more room to play.

With regards to network cards....the stock card is pretty decent, its a broadcom model and supports B/G networks. It also works with OS X just fine with no modifications. If you wish to go up to N capabilities some of the better models to choose from are:

Intel 5100 series...supports A/B/G/N networks and uses the 2 stock antenna
Intel 5300 series...same as 5100 but uses three antenna. You can get a set of tyco universal antenna and install one in the upper left corner of the case to get better reception and faster speeds but usually the 5100 works just as good.

Gigabyte GN-WI06-RH is an atheros 5008 based chipset that uses three antenna, supports packet injection, ABGN networks, and works with OS X. This is one of the coolest running NIC of the ones I mentioned but also costs the most out of the three.

There are others but these are the three I have dealt with.

If you dont like the layout of the keyboard, there is an international ENGLISH keyboard that is laid out more like a regular keyboard. Unfortunately the keys are a bit smaller and makes it somewhat hard to type if you have big fingers.

Part numbers

U061H Keyboard-Single pointing, US-Internal 14.99 plus ship (There is a trick to set these up correctly, Hold FN plus the 6 key...plug in the AC Adapter and then release this combination.)

J613H Wireless bluetooth module (include cable) 20 dollars plus ship

To get these you will have to call or email someone in the Dell small parts division. I can provide the email of the man I dealt with, he spoke decent english and Im told he is good in spanish also. Trying to order from chat or a normal sales person generally does not work. Something about the small parts numbers dont reference in their system so they always think they are not available.

Wrapping things up a bit, if you want a ton of information including the disassembly guide from DELL internal or want other internal part numbers head on over to My Dell Mini. There is a ton of information there. We also have an individual in the for sale section that is making cordura based sleeves for the mini with fleece lining. Very nice and reasonable price if anyone is interested....I have two from him and they are simply awesome for the price.

We also have a dedication section and some dedicated members to running MAC OS X on our minis. Please do not reference the MSI Wind hack version, its a crapastic install compared to whats available from the gents on the forums and costs you nothing to do it. It will require you to have a legal copy of Mac OS X but that really isnt all that bad.

i just got one. i went cheap and didnt get any extras. if you have the solid state drive version can you later upgrade to a regular hard drive? if so do you need any special mounting hardware? if you get a bigger solid state drive like the 64 gig patriot ones advertised for the eepc at frys will they work in this????

Samsclub.com has a Dell Mini 8.9" for $245 w/free shipping. It has an 8GB SSD, 1GB of ram and Windows XP loaded. I think i'd rather go for that model personally.

This is a really nice netbook. A little small for my liking, but very quick and a rock solid build. Hopefully the Mini 10 will be the best of both worlds between the Mini 9 and the Lenovo s10.

EDIT: I had the 8gb version and was able to shove XP Home, Office, and a full compliment of free lightweight apps (pidgin, foxit, alzip, etc) into 1.2gb installed. This left plenty of space with a 16gb SDHC card installed.

Should also note (and I DO NOT advocate doing this) that when I tried to return my mini 9 to Dell, they gave me $50 off my purchase. They are definitely trying to clear out for the Mini 10.

Nope, only has provision for the mini pci-e IDE hard drives. EEE pc models are a SATA based mini pci-e and are physically longer than the drive that is in the Mini 9. The drives have to be specifically for the mini 9 and 64GB is currently the largest you can get.

The Mini 10's look interesting but I'll wait and see how they come configured. The mini 12 has the ram soldered onto the motherboard so hopefully they dont follow that route. I know they are going to use the GMA 500 graphics chip which is a little more feature rich than the 950 used in the Mini 9, but there are no OS X drivers available for the GMA 500. I'm personally waiting for the ion platform to make its debut into the netbooks and see what they bring to the table.

There are Runcore 16, 32, and 64gb drives that everyone raves about on the mini9 forum, but they're not exactly cheap. They're apparently a good deal faster than the standard ssd. The way I see it pick up one of these stripped down ones, throw in a $20 2gb stick of ram (I'd recommend doing this with a 1 gig too), and if needed get a runcore 16 or 32gb (which is an upgrade in both size and speed).

I got an 8gb/1gb one on the outlet deals, and added 2gb and bluetooth to it. No space issues so far as I reinstalled with an nlite slimmed down xp, and put all my music on an sdhc.

One thing to remember though is the runcores get faster as the size increases. There have been a few users complaining the 16GB weren't all that fast. The 64GB is the fastest but the 32GB is a good balance between speed, size, and price. The Runcore drives also come with a mini usb port and cable so you can clone your existing drive to the runcore if you wish.

If it were me I would honestly either stick with the stock dell drives (STEC) or go runcore. Everything else available is considerably slower.

16GB STEC drives typically go for about 50-60 dollars shipped in the for sale section on the mini forums.

I agree the key placement is bad, but you can download an ms key configure utility and reassign some keys. It's not perfect but it worked for me (sacrifice colon for quote, etc)

nliting it down will get it to around 500 mb pretty easy. past that, you have to strip all the driver libraries so you'd have to manually install drivers for plug and play devices.

That sounds like a good idea too. I've been wanting a Netbook for college but never felt like spending the money. I notice they also have the one year extened warranty for 14 bucks.
