This makes you wonder how much the production costs for these things really are at this point.

Irrelevant. The TI-89 and its competitors will continue to sell for $149.99 until the end of time. Everyone knows this.

Good god, they cost that much? I remember using the TI-86s in high school back in 2001. We were always told how expensive those were.

Yep, there's an app for that. And it's $2.

I don't understand it either. HP and Casio are starting to make some really nice graphing calculators, but they haven't seen to have taken off yet.

Granted, a lot of standardized tests won't let you use them. So you'd be at a disadvantage like I was using a calculator you aren't familiar with.

The good old days of graphing calculators.

Pro-tip: You could use the programming features as note takers to sneak equations and formulas into tests.

A friend of mine had the TI-92 Plus. Damn that was a beast of a graphing calculator and completely overkill for our AP Calculus class needs.

things have been changing, when I started high school a TI83 was like $100. When I started college they were like $40, and everyone had at least a TI84 or 89.

I used to do that, but funny thing is that I never, EVER had to view those notes during a test. The simple act of adding the note was enough to help me memorize the formulas. :awe:

whatever. TI89 was worth every single penny i paid for it. my engineering classes would have been more miserable w/o it

Good thing I didn't major in math then. I would have thrown it at them for making me spend $150 on a calculator that can be replicated on any modern computing device.

Eh, past Calculus there's not really much need for a graphing calculator.

So true! I still have mine, in my desk at work, and bust it out on occasion. Granted the PC makes it almost irrelevant, but there is something nostalgic about using it .

Got my trusty ti-83 plus here

Coworker showed me how to do the programming thing, too bad semester was pretty much done by then so I never did use it

They have to charge that much still, because they pay for lobbying state departments of education, spamming message boards for math teachers, etc. They've managed to get TI-83+ incorporated into tons of textbooks. Yet, in general, math students are no better off for this. In fact, I'd argue that the average student actually knows LESS because of graphing calculators.

I have a ti-83+ from my days in high school science classes and CEGEP( yeah I live in Quebec...) and pretty much the way we were taught is that we had to show our complete solutions anyways so the calculator was only useful to double check what you did. In CEGEP we were banned from using them in exams so if you relied on that you were screwed.

When I was in EE about 5 years ago the only thing we could use is a regular hex calculator.

Really they need to start selling some more powerful calculators for people that actually use them but at the same time they need to make people learn the math without the tool to make sure that they at least understand what they are doing instead of just pressing 5 buttons for the answer.
