Buddy of mine a while back gave me this game ,it sat in a drawer for ages and i figured it can't be that much fun but after getting it to finally install on windows 7 yesterday i enter the game and i'm hooked immediately.

I started gaming about 2006,my first pc game was BF2 but i noticed this game is in a whole other league in its own and it is addictive.

Curious about what kinda mods you can do,is there any major updates as far as widescreen support, any major bug fixs?I know really nothing about this game.

After playing some free to play games like Battlefieldplay4free ,i do much prefer the original version especially since i already own it.

Always have seen free to play games as cash cows, the best weapons are always ones you need to pay cash for.

Also have satellite net nowadays, pinging over 750ms,i have seen some fps games take 3 seconds from when i press the fire button till a actual bullet comes out LOL.

quakelive is the same thing basically.. just tuned for modern pc's and networks.

Ironically both quake live and the original cd version i have already installed are giving me the big fu concerning my satellite net,the moment i connect to any sorta game in either versions,i get a connection disconnected noticed.:awe:

The most fun i could have with Quakelive is if i take a screenshot of that notice, post it in here and then make it a screensaver for my desktop.:|

When i play the original cd version,i adjust the bot skill level to where i get a good challenge in and play offline, which is tons of fun still with no hackers,no disconnection notices and no long ass loading times......

You have to get Unreal tournament then. Much better ambiance IMO than Q3A.

LIES!!!!

UT is ok, but could never compare to Q3A IMO. Plus Ive never been able to run UT99 on anything later than Windows XP.

Been enjoying Q3A hell of a lot more lately,do have UT2004 and its one of my favorites but the admins don't take lightly to the idea of a satellite user and for the most part i spend 10 minutes attempting to connect to servers which all forcefully kick me and about 5 mins gaming when i finally am allowed to stay on a server before the high ping is annoying enough to leave.

Original Doom was a game i could only get to work on vista if the version was 32bit,i guess the installer was 16bit and i had vista 64bit which excluded 16 bit support.

Idk if UT99 is 16bit or not but Doom never gave me issues on even windows 7 when i tried that as well.

Quake III Arena is in a league of its own.

fast movement, bouncing "flying" acrobatics while shooting... advanced acrobatic tricks... very cool game. Haven't seen anything that comes close to Q3A play style.

The graphics are dated... but who cares when the game is more fun than just about any other player-vs-player FPS.

I downclocked my 7850 to 450/600 for energy savings purpose, puts it at about 7750 performance, keep the fan at 25% and maxed out at 1600x1200 with the /com_maxFPS 250 command and i pump out a steady 250fps while only pulling about 22-25% usage which is awesome and temps hardly go up over idle.

Just getting competitive at strafe jumping takes more skill than most entire games these days.

L-fire q2 ctf was the height of online fps. Q3a was good but didn't match it.

the UT crowd and the Quake crowd will never see eye to eye, the games are extremely similar, but the actual play is still very nuanced for each game.

they are both amazing, but play differently.

that said, UT2k4 > *

I had fun with both, but I found UT99 to be a tad bit one dimensional compared to Quake 3. Then 2k4 tried to make up for it with vehicles, which IMO, ruined the series.

I just love the Quake......
But for some reason Unreal stands heads and tails above the Quake series...yet they ruined Unreal when they added the vehicles....

Well, on my laptop, the Intel HD (pre-Sandy Bridge) still manages (barely) 60 fps at 1600 x 900, albeit, without AA. Temps stay nice and cool, relatively speaking. I'm sure anything later should keep up very well if low power draw is your cup o tea.

Yeah the game doesn't call for much,hd2000 on my i5 2500 can max the game out and run 100fps capped no problem at 1600x1200.

I was always an UT99 man myself. UT2004 was fun too.

I've been playing UT3 recently as I crave arena shooters which just aren't made anymore. UT3 is ok but it aint UT99.

Were you able to find any of the point releases (updates), map packs, or the OSP mod for Q3? I believe point release 1.32, released in 2001/2002, is the last one. There are still people who play FFA and CTF. You would probably find a larger community on QuakeLive, though.

The speed of Q3A is just awesome. I loved that game more than UT for LAN parties.

Oh LAN parties, I miss them.

I don't know why people even mention vehicles, it's not like we are discussing game modes that have them, no one was rolling around in a jeep in TDM. If we are comparing Q3 and UT, why would we be talking about anything but TDM?

People played Q3A for the DeathMatch. FFA and Team DeathMatch.
People played UT99 for the CTF.

I played UT99 CTF in 2000. (European servers. Jolt, BarrysWorld, WirePlay, etc). Awesome experience. I will never forget that.

The game was balanced to allow infantry and vehicles to play along side each other. When you then played modes without vehicles, the weapon damage, player speed, and other mechanics just didn't feel as tailored to DM style combat as UT99 did, since it was built only for those game modes. To be honest, I feel UT3 brought back a bit more of a UT99 feel, so I've always preferred it. They of course screwed up the launch, but if it shipped with some of the later patches, I don't think it would have got such a negative reaction from the fan base.
