Okay, pet peeve time. You guys do know that the 0.26mm dot pitch listed on the Samsung site and the 0.22mm dot pitch listed on the Samtron site are the SAME THING, right? (I really hate the way monitor manufacturer's scam people like this).

First of all, the one listed on Samsung is Diagonal while the Samtron is Horizontal(H). Most monitors have a 0.22mm dp Horizontal(H) and 0.14mm Vertical (V). To get the Diagonal (D), you have to compute the hypotenuse of the triangle: D^2 = H^2 + V^2. Plugging the 0.22 and 0.14 into this equation you get the 0.26. There are basically NO monitors with a 0.22 diagonal dot pitch, the best around is usually 0.25 (Aperature Grill or "Trinitron" monitors). So, just make sure which size is being listed when you're comparing. In this case, the dot pitch is identical between the two monitors.

I think the 95P+ is .26 dot pitch while the 95P is .22 dot pitch. Look at the product brochures listed on the site in .pdf for each model.

Hey, thanks valkyrie. Your insightful explanation of manufacturer's confusing dot pitch tactics helped a lot. Also, I noticed that the higher refresh rates on Samsung-Europe-Germany website show higher figures probably because they are MAX rates.

well, this same site (dell) has the real 950p for 265. PM to staples add
$40 coupon = $225. only $20 more for a considerably better monitor.

LukFilm, you are right, they did . I ordered Friday and my total came to about $260 after price match. Anyway, I went with Staples because they ship faster and it is much easier to return the monitor in case something is wrong. Besides, they gave us quite a few nice deals . Monitor was here on Monday and looks great with the Elsa Gladiac GeForce2 I got from Staples .

staples just charges you the same shipping the site does; ~ $20 here.
so the shipping is a wash whether you buy from dell or staples.

Shipping is the same (well, if you didn't got it free), Staples charges tax but they have cupons. As far as I know , with Dell, if you don't like it you pay return shipping which may be not cheap on a monitor.

I like the 950p, it is not flat but the picture quality is great. I bought a 900ift last year from onvia and I found the picture quality not satisfactory, so I returned it. May be I just got a bad unit but I have read that quite a few of the flat monitors have problems.
Anyway, the deal is still good, what is the opinion on the monitor, I might get one for my wife?

just got mine today which is wierd because it only took a day, dell must be down the street.

anyways some comments. This thing is big, the casing is pretty big even for a 19" which is cool, get more for my money ( hehe ).

the monitor has no brand labels on it, just a blank biege front.

Picture quality is excellent, I just upgraded from a Viewsonic E771, and this monitor makes the Viewsonic look washed out and dark.

one problem I thought I had, I was playing counterstrike at 1280x1024 and I had a wierd moire effect pattern show up on the corners of the screen. I was first thinking ... oh man its just a cheapy ... but after messing around in the menu there is a moire feature! heh a couple pushes of a button and the pattern was gone.

great picture, great menu, bnc connectors, a total kick @$$ monitor for the price. only draw backs are size and the non flat screen. plus the monitor swivel stand works suprisingly well, usually on monitors the stand is pretty hit and miss, its a pleasant surprise.

CS never look so good, heh sniping with a hand grenade with this puppy.

The monitor came today, I swapped out my KDSvs195 and tweaked the 95P+ for a while. At 1024*768 @ 100hz I could not get the color saturation as good as the KDS and the text was not as sharp either. The screen is also curved slightly more than the KDS. It does have 5-BNC connectors and excellent geometry controls. A Samsung 753DF I hooked up to my daughters computer blows the vs195 and the 95P+ away. I am jealous.

I got mine on Wednesday (ordered it on Sunday) so I wasn't expecting Dell to ship so quickly on a holiday weekend via UPS. Their website didn't have the ship info for my unit; the only info was that it was shipped so I was unable to track its progress.

The monitor has a fine picture. There was a previous question regarding Win 2000 drivers. I have Win 2000 and the monitor was working after I hooked everything up. Do I have to install the Samtron drivers for Win2000 even tho everything is operating without me installing them?

PS: Great deal for $205 with free shipping.

Brab:

Yes, I know about the drivers that are included with the monitor. But I wanted to know whether it was necessary to use them even though everything shows up OK on the screen.

baron45, yes, install the new drivers, you will see all the available resolutions show up in the properties-settings, also proper timings will be set in windows with your vid card, and sometimes phosphors and color profile info will be available. The manual gives polarity info which you can set if your vid card allows. By the way I just found this out and my 95P+ is looking sooo good right now at 1280*1024@ 90 HZ. Wish it was flat though.

Holy cow! This monitor is amazing!

I ordered one to replace my beloved NEC XP17 (not the plebian XV17 with limited refresh rates) only 'cause I wanted a larger image size but couldn't spare a garage bay for a 21".

The 95p+ is only slightly larger than the 17" overall, but the image size really makes a difference. I thought I'd be trading quality for size, but the Samtron rocks! It's crystal clear, the colors are clean, no distortion, the screen is reasonably flat, and the controls are the best I've seen yet.

In case you were wondering what happened to the gorilla from the old Samsonite luggage commercials, he's a UPS package handler now. After the Samtron bounced all the way to Connecticut, I didn't even have to touch the (excellent) geometry controls. The screen was perfectly aligned, a sign of better-than-average build quality.

Even the driver is well-written! Although the default refresh rate varies and isn't always a good choice (most monitor makers are very conservative with default refresh rates) you get your choice of alternatives, and I don't mean "Optimal" or "Default". Even at 1600 X 1200, way too high for most folks at this size, the 95p+ can still grunt out 75hz, just above the VESA standard 72.

All in all, a really terrific showing for a monitor that set me back $200 plus the cost of a bad lunch at the Bridgeport Flytrap Diner. Definitely the best upgrade I've made since the MS Mouse with IntelliEye (the crud still builds up on the glide pads, but you never have to scrape it off the rollers). Sleepwalker, thanks for a great Hot Deal!

The deal dead? :/

I was initially going to jump on it, but then the Samsung/Samtron issue sort of threw me off for a bit...then a couple people said it wasn't worth buying...blah

I'm sick of this 15" I have here...13.5" viewable...ugh

I just had the 95p+ go out on me. Well it's actually working but now it has a ghosting effect and has a slight purplish tint. Needless to say it looks horrible. I tried it on another computer, tried using it with the BNC connector rather than D-SUB and same results. So I called Dell and now they're telling me too bad. You only have a warranty if you bought a system through Dell with that purchase. So they transferred me around like 4 different times and I gave up and called Samtron instead. They basically told me that it's an OEM monitor made specifically to Dell and Samtron won't have anything to do with it unless it comes from Dell. So I called Dell back and they transfer me around some more until I finally said I want to talk to a manager and they transfer me and I sit on hold for 5 minutes listening to on hold music until the phone finally hangs up. ARGGHHH. Those bastards now I'm gonna have to call them back. I have a name of a manager at Samtron and number that's supposed to know about this and Dell isn't taking any responsibility. They're basically telling me that if it breaks within 30 days you're SOL. I say it's false advertising as the website doesn't mention anything about it being a 3-year warranty ONLY if it was bought with a full system. I may have to dispute the credit card charges if Dell doesn't turn their story around or cooperate. Hell I may just do that anyway since they'll probably make me pay for shipping the product back anyway.

CuriousG,

next time you get to speak with someone at Dell, tell them you'd be more than happy to dispute the charge with your credit card company. If they still give you the runaround, then definitely dispute it with your CC asap (esp. if you're within 60 days by law). Even if you're not within the 60 day limit, I'd still go to your CC. As long as you're a customer in good standing, your bank will usually back you up for any reasonable disputes.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give Dell one more chance to make things right then I'm going to my cc issuer which is my local bank which gives me even more pull especially since I've been with them for about 15 years and have never disputed a charge.
