I've been using their free 3-year trial for some time now and I must say, they are quite impressive. I've NEVER had any problems with service. They have a lot of great features. Webmail is included...very nice.

When they were up and comers. I chose not to get involved with them after seeing some of the stuff with hosting companies so I can't say how their service is.

However,
I've been very satisfied with Telnap
Prompt emails about any downtime issues, quality service.

I am also using their free trial... satisfied. Their control panel can speed up a little, but overall, very good. Never asked for tech support though, so am not sure how that is.

the only issue i have with 1and1 is their email servers..... really delayed at times, and you arent guarrented to receive your mail 100% of the times... but thats just my experience.

but as for the webserver, its pretty fast!

and i have the 3yr free aswell.

oh also, a major downside is that you are forced to use their user ids for logins.

You might want to know they are offering free registration of .info domains right now (normally 5.99 per year) - for your first 25 .info domains. btw, the .info domain space has a lot more available good names than .com has, so there's a good chance to get what you want or very close to it, unlike .com where you need to come up with some horrible twists to get anywhere close to the domain name you want (kinda like license plates in CA).

Yes I have two of the free 3 year accounts and can say they work very well and are fast. As you say the control panel is fairly slow though. never needed tech support so I can't say about that.

I've used them before, still have some time left on the 3-yr trial. But I found them to be very unresponsive when their mailservers land on the SBL because of their users spamming.

no problems eh? I've had plenty...

Their bandwidth is pretty low on the shared servers. probably because so many people are stacked in each server for the free 3 year service.

I've also had lots of email problems. I connect via POP3 from Thunderbird email client. I used to get a lot of down time where email couldn't come in to my account. Caused problems with my automatic subscription emails from the forum, and also some email user groups I belong to. I also have frequent slow times when I try to access my mail and send stuff. The servers just respond slowly.

And as other already said, the control panel is no good.

Oh, one other thing. Maybe this is different for a paid account, but for the free ones they give you totally random usernames and passwords. Makes email and such kind of a pain...

Ok for hobby site, but could be bad for business. A casual user might never notice the outages, but you will be unhappy when customers start to call about a dead site.

Wow, I've never had any quarrels. Of course, I don't use the email side of the account, which is quite a big feature for most people. However, I DO use the website a lot, the ftp a lot, and it's nice to use the ssh service now and then. I've recently added a MySql database and have frequently used their cgi scripts. I don't mind the control panel at all, however, if I were paying for the subscription I may say otherwise.

I agree that the randomly generated usernames and sitenames are annoying, but that's a tiny price to pay for 3 free years of service. I signed up twice and have been using the free info domains like user1234 mentioned. Together the setup is quite slick.

If you want an awesome webhost with a top notch control panel and full ssh access, go with Dreamhost.

$7.95/month for:
1 FREE domain registration
3 full domains, 15 subdomains
800 MB Disk, 40 GB Transfer
600 Mailboxes, 75 Shell/FTP Users

I've only very rarely had problems, and when I do their support team is always responsive.

1 & 1? I can't imagine anyone using them for anything but a personal or hobby site. Their control panel is horrible, and they have too many proprietary systems.
