Haven't posted for a couple of days because, I've been tweaking my new TBird system, a 1.2G as a matter of fact...

First Tbird system... I would like to say it was as smooth as butter, but there were plenty of bumps in the road... Not the processor, but rather the Motherboard, the Abit KT7-Raid...

First RAID configuration... Just... Haven't notice much, yet, but I haven't done much with it yet either...

The system is nice and stable, I've been running tests on it for hours now... Works great...

Nice Spook

I just got my 1.1g together today, I'm running at 1208 right now

You know...it's funny, I bought the retail kit, hoping the HSF would be permanently attached to the cpu already so I don't have to worry about mounting it. Nope. It's not mounted and the HSF(although itself good, had some pink pad already on the bottom) LOL so I ended up scraping it off. Then I made a slight mess with a razor and heatsink compound, but in the end,I mounted it correctly and it's running nice Perhaps I should have picked up an OEM 1.2 instead of a 1.1 retail but I wanted retail and no 1.2s were to be found anywhere...

When I bought mine at the show, the guy warned me of that. So, I just happened to be giving my buddy some artic silver, and told the guy to put some on the combo. So I wouldn't have to worry about scratching it myself. So, I had several problems, and at one point I checked the Heat sync... This guy put like half the syringe, the bigger the glob, the better...no it isn't... At one point I put regular Radio Shack heat sync compound on... Now the system is put together, and I cant get the Heat sync out without pulling out the motherboard... I want Artic silver on there, but I can't get at it.... ahhh...

I joined the club last week and had a bad bios flash so I had to jump back on my Celeron 333 until my new motherboard comes in. Hopefully tomorrow.

I too bought the 1.1gig thinking the heatsink would be attached. I think I'll order a different heatsink and some Artic Silver. If I have to attach the heatsink and fan it might as well be a good one.

If I have my cpu running at 10X but my FSB at 95 for 950 does that make me a member of the club?

I'm still a virgin at this

I joined last summer with a MSI 6337 and P3 700@1015. TO be honest I dont see any real performance difference, It just does Seti wu,s faster now and a higher 3dmark score big deal. Spook Your slow down for your Win2k bootup is being caused by your boot drive being connected to your raid controller. This is common in Win2k when your boot drive is connected to a scsi, raid, external ide controller card.

Congratulations ALL!!! I hope to be joining the "1 GHz" club very soon. I can get a retail-boxed 900MHz T-Bird right now for $168, a 950MHz retail for $200, a 1GHz OEM for $206 or a 1.1 GHz OEM for $258. I think the "deal" is obvious, the OEM 1 GHz.

What HSF would you all recommend for the OEM 1 GHz???

BTW, mobo contenders are AOpen AK73 Pro (did great in Tom Pabst's review of twentysome Via KT-133 boards) or the Asus A7v or MSI KT7 Pro 2 or 2 "a".

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Memory will be Mushkin HP Rev 2 and video will be GeForce 2 GTS.

get the k7t pro2. It has lots of features and works great. The Aopen model is probably ok, too, my last computer had a socket 7 Aopen board and it worked fine, very few crashes. You can't go wrong wiheither one, however I have heard too many horror storys about abit kt7s, stay awawy from them.

I'd probably go with the Thermaltake Chrome Orb. Don't get the super orb it is apparently so heavy it crushes cpu's. Instead get the Chrome orb with the 10000rpm fan. Make sure to use artic silver and spread it on thin.

I own an Asus A7 mombo and it is great. Personally I'd reccomend MSI though. They have phenomenal customer service. Their boards are great and rock stable. Their customer service really sets them apart. I had a question on flashing the bios and they wrote me back the same day. I had another question about upgrading and they wrote me back within a couple of days. Also usually their bios flash download are simpler to use: everything is in the winzip package and they run themselves. Not like Asus where you have to download 2 seperate files and then hit all these keys...

I would not get a KT133 based board with the KT133A boards becoming available now. They will allow you to run your Athlon at FSB speeds of up to 140 or so. The Orb's are not the best coolers for Socket A CPU's, I would suggest either of the Global Wins, the copper "Hedgehog", any of the Taisol's, or the either of the Alpha's. It all depends on how much noise you can tolerate. Good Luck!
