Ford has confirmed that Trinity (the 5.8 that you are talking about) will fit in the new mustang with minor modifications (see link below). That being said, I wouldn't count on them actually putting it in. It's probably more likely that there will be a twin-turbo V8 coyote derived engine in a model sitting above the GT350. I'm VERY excited in the prospect of the GT350 (especially after the modifications that the coyote will already be getting in the GT).

One of the key factors for me is a lower price than the GT500. If I'm up at that price point, I'm looking at other vehicles (both slightly used and new) that are simply better overall cars than a 662hp mustang (despite being a bit slower overall in a straight line). My question is can the GT350 compete with the Z51 Stingray (as an overall package) at around the same price point.

interested in seeing what the 4 banger sounds like. both in and out of the car (and hopefully with the speakers unplugged)

I suspect the GT350 has arisen due to the planned weight reduction for the new Mustang which would present the perfect opportunity to drop down in power (and price) from the GT500

But many have doubted the rumored 200 to 300 lb weight reduction since Ford was completely silent about weight on the 12/5/13 reveal. However the Mustang program manager did confirm there would be material weight savings but no specific # was mentioned. What follows is a person's recap of some questions asked.

There was a Q&A with Prakash Patel, program manager for the Mustang who is responsible for program management, timing etc. Not a ton of salacious info but there were a few interesting tidbits.

Q: Can we expect an updated version of the coyote?
A: The 5.0L engine has been significantly updated including 420+ HP and 390+ ft-lbs of torque.

Q: How much will the car weigh?
A: We are still in midst of confirming our final weight but the team has set very aggressive targets and we are on track to achieve those.

Q: Will the turbocharged 2.3 liter engine have forged internals?
A: The 2.3L EcoBoost will have forged steel crankshaft with premium bearing materials.

Q: When we will be able to order one?
A: The all-new 2015 Mustang will be available in fall 2014.

And I agree that the most likely powerplant in the next GT500 will be a twin turbo 5.0. I'm just not sure it will match the 662HP of the outgoing mill. But with a theoretically lighter car (new design & no supercharger) it won't have to have as much HP to be as fast . . . . but still why go down in HP?

The one thing to remember is that the 5.8L is making a lot more than 662HP, but a good amount is lost to the parasitic affects of the supercharger. Putting twin turbos on a 5L might still produce the same amount of HP.

Afermarket already has 1,000 hp turbo coyotes. 700 HP would be fairly easy for ford to offer w/warranty.

turbo's in the next gen gt500 would be a game changer in the aftermarket world

:/

That's really not a great response. Of course it's going to have a forged steel crankshaft, question would be will it have forged pistons and con rods. Sounds like no, so probably your typical ~300 bhp out the gate and mod to ~350-375 before it blows up

The gt500 has had a blower for years, why would a turbo change the game? Most turbos are accompanied by turbo lag and would be slower unless they twin turbo`d it. The engine in the GT500 is a bit of a staple for that car, I couldn't imagine them putting anything other than the 5.8l blown v8. BUT there is always room for improvement and change, so... who knows what we'll get?

A TT Coyote would be great, easily can make >750bhp, while weighing 100lbs less. New turbo systems have virtually no lag and the fuel economy benefits are huge, IMO there's no downside there, unless you have a supercharger fetish (that whine does sound awesome).

The only downside is complexity IMO. A surpercharger like the roots simply sits on top of the engine and requires only pluming for the heat exchanger. TT setup is even more complex.

Complexity is largely just an issue in aftermarket modifications, if it's planned from the ground up it isn't as much of a problem. Turbo systems like that are very robust, not nearly as fragile or prone to failure as they were just 10 years ago, provided you're diligent with their service.
