Totally impractical car at the moment but I really like the look of the sharp lines. 400hp is going to get me into a lot of trouble though. Also the interior leaves much to be desired. IMO my 10yr old GS has a better looking and higher quality interior. Anyways it's just a crazy thought but was wondering what you guys think of it.

Honestly, you'd get a better deal by just going for :

GTO
E39 M5

Depending on how much you want to spend on maintenance.

The 1st-gen CTS-V is a nice car, but yeah, the new model just makes the old one look antiquated.

Yep the old one is nice, but the new one blows it away.

They also do have a weak Diff. So if it is really driven hard, beatenup on, and/or upgraded enigne then the diff is a weak point and will need to be upgraded.

Other then that they are solid cars if they are taken care of.

I own a 3.6L 2004 CTS.

I thought about going to one of those when I wrecked my GTO, but the higher weight and higher cost turned me off as I was looking for something more practical than the Goat. But there is little else out there with four doors, a V8, and a six-speed manual...

nice chiseled exterior
interior is dated but livable
monster drivetrain

alternatives:
GTO = UGLY. 2dr.
BMW E39 = im wary of used BMW.

ive been thinking hard about swapping my S2000 for a CTS-V... but i think ill hold off (cant part with the topless, ergonomics, and tranny). S2k supposedly has weak diff too but i dont drive like a teenager so im not concerned about it on the CTSV

i really, really, really like this car

I researched these pretty heavily:

Major Gripes:
Rear diff - rarely breaks, but whines. Supposedly the Diff was redesigned for the 2006 model year
Interior - Nav screen buttons break often
wheel-hop due to not enough tire & shitty axles poor suspension geometry

If you buy one, buy one with a warranty and then buy the Cadillac extended warranty. I prefer the 6.0L ones over the Z06 5.7L as its less technical. Others call the 6.0L a truck motor.

Pontiac G8 GXP to be released in about 5-months might be a better choice.

The Nav buttons do not break off, the paint wears off.

Diffs don;t whine unless they get low on fluid. There is a re-call on 05 and up first Gens as the maker of the diff seal had problems. My 04 has the old, good, seal.

The 5.7L and 6.0L are the same just one is bigger. It is not a truck motor. The 6.0L used Iron heads when it first came out for the trucks. The 6.0L for the GTO/CTS-V/Corvette are different. One is not more or less "technical" then the other.

I really like the CTS-V, almost bought a 2004 last year actually for a DD. I liked the car overall, but my two gripes were sloppy rear end and the interior was crap.

Thats like saying take a new ZR1 over a old C5 Z06. Well duh, one is newwer and more updated.

That and a new V8 G8 will cost more then a older CTS-V. Also the G8 is Auto only, no stick.

Reason me and my wife got our 04 CTS was becuse it was a lot of car for the money. Of course the CTS-V has not dropped as much and some are asking way to much IMO.

current G8 GT pricing is only a couple grand more than the 04 CTS-Vs around here, and it's probably worthwhile just for the warranty alone. a more recent V is the same price or more. it's not the $30Kish to 100K+ comparison you've come up with.

Thats why I added the part about a lot of CTS-V owners want to much for their car. Also the Caddys come with a longer factory warranty then Pontiacs.

But if you want a auto V8 then the G8 is nice. But if you want the full 400hp, G8 is only 385hp, and 6 speed manual then the CTS-V is it.

GTO is a fanboi car. You either like it or not..they have terrible resale value.

Not sure where you are at, but GTOs sell pretty high. They are kinda like the CTS-V. The listed value is lower then what people are asking and getting for ones in good shape.

04 CTS-V does not have more warranty left than a brand new 08 G8 GT.

You'll be lucky to get an '04 GTO for $15K. Anything selling under $15K will generally have high miles, an automatic trans, or some bad modifications.

At $12K it must be beat to death with a salvage title.
