w00t! just scored one in southgate, mi. there's still some left in novi. c'mon you guys! I thought these would all be gone by now. Don't make me have to go buy the rest myself tomorrow. theyll be great for building entry-level systems for my friends.

Well, it was weird. I called and talked to a guy named Christopher. He didn't give me the "we dont sell these anymore, its not in our system" speech like several other stores. I had called Canton and they told me the computer said there was 11 there. When I called he said he probably had at least 5. I still haven't made it out there, as I live Downriver. Make sure you leave a couple of those for this here vulture while he tunes up his tractor.

OM: I know that, a guy called yesterday looking for one and I told him we didn't have any, they were discontinued
ME: So you're refusing to look in the back?
OM: We don't have any.

I asked the other dude to check the other 2 stores in the springs, and another store shows one. I call and this one is supposedly "defective". Somebody is probably holding in the back until they get paid on friday so he told his co workers "tell em it's defective!"

Similar deal for me at the second store I went to. I went in and he checked the SKU, they *didn't* have any in stock, but he told me they had just had one but it had a bad sector. Uh... I mean, we just sold it but the person returned it because it was bad. We don't have it anymore...

Uh-huh...

But the OTHER place I went had one that they'd let me buy!!!! The guy looking it up and when "Whooooooo!" I said "Do you have any?" He said, "Yeah, I think we have one in the back, let me go check." I got all nervous thinking that he was going to come back and say that he couldn't find it. But no, he came back. It was an open box, but everything was in there and the drive was sealed and it had the $119 sticker on it. He said "Man, that's a great deal! If I had known, I would have had it out front instead of in the back. Here, let me check to make sure it's the right one" (since it was marked at $119) It *was* the right one and he handed it to me, thanked me for shopping there and wished me a nice day.

Even the woman at the cash register commented on what a great deal it was and told me to have a nice day. So I guess not ALL Office Max employees are a-holes. I know which store I'm going to visit again

Thanks again to whoever started this thread. And if anybody here is in San Antonio TX, go harrass the a-holes at the I-10 and De Zavala Office Max for me. They were the one's who refused to even check in the back, and the customer service woman was snickering at me as walked out of the store.

I called several stores and they all told me one store in my area had two left. I called this store and asked them to confirm if they had any left. The lady punched in the sku numbers and told me they had none left. When I asked why three stores I called told me she had two left, She told me she knows whats in the store and she knows they don't have them anymore. She even told me she had been looking for them for herself for a long time. Its probably true the store doesn't have any left because she was waiting for payday to buy them. The minute she punched in the sku she would have seen that two were listed in stock but the first thing out of her mouth was that they don't carry this product.

Just went to check out the Bend, Oregon OM on a whim. I figured it had been awhile since these were marked down so they would all probably be gone. Walked inside and there were none on the shelf. Went to the register and asked the dude if they had any discontinued WD 30 GB hard drives. Guy says, "I don't think so let me check." Then walks straight to the customer service counter and pulls out their last one! This was an extremely open box, as in it wasn't in one! sombody did a terrible job of shrinkwrapping it in the bag but all the stuff was there and it was still sealed in the static bag. Drive was marked $50 but when he rang it up it was $29.

It's not very difficult to figure out. Unless the clerk you're talking to doesn't have a clue, as soon as they see that the item is clearanced at a great price, most empolyees will pick-up what's left for themselves, family, or friends. All you're doing by calling to check availability is making sure the only people that get those deals are the employees.

I should have figured as much. I called my OM, the guy's like "... we don't carry any. It's not showing up in the computer at all." I didn't give him an SKU, though, i just said "30GB WD drive"... but, bleh.

Not a bad deal - but dollar for dollar and gig for gig, this works out to roughly $1/gig.

There are 80GB drives on the forum going for about $80 (albeit with rebates involved) - same price per gig.


Still I am tempted......

ALL STORES ARE OUT OF THE HARDDRIVES!

I went to my local office max in Houston, and it showed they had 2 on hand. He went and checked and they were out. But since it was early in the mornin (8:15, just opened) noone was there, so he did a company wide search of ALL of the office maxes. He called atleast 30 different stores that showed they had the harddrives. Even one store showed it had 16 of them, but when he called they said they had none.. pretty messed up.

He only checked stores that had 2 or more, so maybe if your store has just 1 "on-hand" you might be able to get it, but chances are you won't. Keep trying though.

I think he may have lied to me about the 2 he had in store, because the lady who was working with him asked, "did you check the hardware cage?", and he turned around and lipped something i think, but hey, what can i do?

I thought I bought all the 30 gig/$30 hds in town. heh The first OfficeMax I went to was the I-10/Dezavala one and one mexican guy with glasses was nice enough to go in backroom and check for me. I guess I found the one nice guy at that store.

Then I went to the San Pedro Tri-Max OfficeMax across 410 from Northstar Mall and bought 4 unopened 3o gig hd's there.

You got the one drive my vulture like eyes miss. Congratulations.

This was a great deal, but I couldn't find any near me. I went to one store and the clerk checked the sku on their system and said that they had 2, then he got a manager so that he could go into the back and check and then came back and said that there were not any in the back and the manager said that the computer system is not always up to date. I snuck a peek at the computer screen while they were looking and it had one listed as available and the other was on hold. hmmmmmm.

This store was also one that was listed as having acouple copies of a kids pc game in stock (one of the Spy fox games) that I saw listed at another store on clearance for $2. When I got to this store however, they said that they did not have any of them so maybe it is true and they just don't update their inventory enough... sigh...

Well, at least that means that there actually weren't any "in the back" when I got there, but it's still irritating that the guy refused to look. If he had just said "Man, I scoured the back for those and there aren't any left", then I wouldn't have had a problem. It was just his blunt refusal that was irritating.
