neither, this Samsung, the 103SJ -

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
$85

they can't keep them in stock; they keep selling out.

Since the 1TB model isn't in stock, I'm considering the 500GB model. Are the 500GB models just as fast as the 1TB Spinpoints? If the 500GB models are just as good, then I might just buy two and have 2 spindles doing the work.

The Samsung is $15 cheaper, which doesn't amount to much in the long scheme of things. Are they actually better performers than the Caviar Black?

I've been working with computers for 25+ years and according to my experience Hitachi/IBM is the safer bet.

That Bit-Tech review looks on the Samsung F3 drive pretty favorably. I'm actually in the market for a 1TB drive as well and am leaning towards grabbing the Samsung drive instead of WD. The WD 5 year warranty is pretty nice though and is making this decision a lot harder than it should be lol.

I have two of the Hitachi units in my Windows Home Server. Seem good so far. Just don't buy Seagate. Never buy Seagate.

I have the samsung 750 and my WD whips it butt, samsung is quiet and has been reliable tho. Both are great drives.

WD drive takes the cake for warranty and generally better performance over most applications.

I am deciding between both of those drives as well. I'm leaning toward the Hitachi as I want to run a RAID 5 array and I've read WD cripples their consumer drives for this purpose, I'm not sure about Hitachi.

BTW the Hitachi 1TB was/is $70 at Amazon today, if they still have any instock.

With the exception of Connor drives waaaaay back in the 90's, I've had more WD's on me die than any other brand. Seagate had their issues with the 7200.11 line but I'd still recommend them over WD any day of the week. I'd had a dozen or so WD's die on me, and only about 3-4 Seagates.

Good for you. My experience is the polar opposite of yours. I currently have a Seagate drive doing its best to cook itself while being cooled directly by a 120mm fan drawing outside air. And it's started the click of death, too. The WD in the same pack is cool as a cucumber.

I've 4 7200.11 drives (got them perfectly cheap after the FW disaster..) and had no problems so far.

Every drive can fail, that's just how it is - get the cheapest drive (I haven't met anyone who could tell the difference between different manufacterers of the same generation without benchmarking..) and/or the one with longest warranty (does anyone still offer 5 years in the consumer space?), have a reasonable backup solution and everythings fine..

was a bad month for me and my wd640's. 1/2 my wd capacity (2 pieces) an aals/aaks went tits up. both were a year or more old and has shaken my wd faith. hitachi is still on my good side (2-160's) but i think samsung is in my future.

I have 3 1TB Hitachi's in raid 5 (Linux software raid) and they work great. The samsungs are known to be better but last I checked it's also 100 bucks more expensive. But that may have changed.
