The 2.0T in my wife's A4 continues to impress me. This engine has been around for 6+ years in some form or another and is still putting up some impressive numbers. Her car is saddled with 3600lbs, an AWD system, and an automatic transmission, and still was showing 35.6 MPG average over a 500+ mile trip from Charleston, SC to Ft. Lauderdale, FL on Sunday where I was going 70+ on the highway the whole time. This included a short back road trip into St. Augustine for lunch that involved a ton of lights.

The car does overstate the gas mileage a bit, but based on my gas logs from fill-ups, we were doing about 34.41, so not too far off.

The car has impeccable highway manners, decent handling (this is not my M3, but it is more than acceptable), plenty of power for day to day driving, and a pretty slick automatic. I'm sure I could easily throw an extra MPG or two if I had talked my wife into the manual or we had the 2011 with the 8spd Automatic. And this was not hypermiling at all. I was driving over the speed limit the whole time and the air-conditioner was on 100% of the time along with radio and the moonroof while not driving on the highway.

Sure the new Hyundai Turbo 4 is very impressive and gets even better EPA numbers, but it also isn't saddled with as much weight or a power sapping AWD system. Not to mention that the engine is a lot newer design than the VAG 2.0T which has been around for 6+ years in various forms...so I'm pretty impressed with this engine. Bravo to VAG and to Hyundai for making such great engines for everyday use. GM, you need to put your 2.0T in more applications and I'm looking forward to seeing how Ford's EcoBoost 2.0T does.

Your speedometer is very optimistic
Probably a good thing. Can't get a $200 speeding ticket when you're really just going the speed limit and you don't know it.
I bet Toyota pulls this shit. It would explain why every Toyota on the road is going 20 under the speed limit regardless of what the speed limit is or what the road conditions are. :hmm:

Cars generally don't drop away from their EPA rated mileage unless the car is broken in some way. Tranny slip, injector not working, driving on a flat tire, etc. My ghetto Ford Tempo still got rated mileage when it was 15 years old

Time will tell. It certainly won't be cheap...but the car wasn't cheap to begin with, so oh well. This isn't a money thing as much as my me appreciating efficient engineering. The fact that I can still enjoy this car with its power and automatic transmission when I DD and love an M3 speaks a lot to the engine's capability.

The biggest negative to this engine that I've found is that it sounds like a tractor. The injectors sound very diesel like. You don't hear it from inside the car unless under heavy acceleration, but when I'm used to the soothing sounds of an inline 6 racing to the redline, this comes off very agricultural.

Too new for our purposes. We would like something in the 15K range, I see 06 and some 07 there.

To be honest, this is not a car/make if you are trying to fit a budget. Past warranty, parts and labor costs can be quite high on German cars in general, and they are not known to be reliability queens. If you are willing to do your own maintenance/repairs post warranty, then it will bring the price down considerably, but it will still be more than your typical Toyota/Ford/Honda/Chevy.

That being said, I do like the car a lot and would wholeheartedly recommend it (particularly 09+ as I feel the driving dynamics improved a lot).

The 1.8T and 2.0T's all sound like a TDI, it's the lifters...nothing is wrong, it's just a token Audi/VW noise haha.

I have a 06 b7 A4 2.0t 6 speed, and drove a rental 2010 a4 2.0t and honestly, felt similiar. Mine felt tigher because of the 'sports' suspension, but both are fine cars, love the b7/b8 body style.

I wish they'd bring back a better/reliable version of the bi turbo s4 though...the v8 4.2L is lame .

We have a 2009 Jetta with the 2.0T (TSI) and I feel the same way. The engine just pulls and pulls. We used to have a couple 1.8T GTI's and this engine, while only rated at 20 more bhp, it just feels so much quicker. We averaged almost 37mpg on the way to and from Oregon with a trunk completely full of luggage and 3 adults.

you'll be fine, I bought used about 3 years ago, and do not regret it at all. See if you can get a 2.0T with a timing chain though, which was around 07 I think.

The S4 no longer has the 4.2L. The current S4 is a supercharged 3.0L V6 that is said to put down considerably more horsepower than the 330HP rating alludes to. It is a very fast car.

To each their own regarding the B7 vs. B8 chassis. I have driven many B6 and B7 A4's over the years (company cars, rentals, colleagues), and I immediately noticed a difference when I test drove the B8. I probably would have gone with a used '08 if that weren't the case. The only B7 felt much more nose heavy...but again, to each their own. I'm happy that you enjoy your B7...it was a great looking car and was still a great car even if I prefer the B8.

I really like A4's as of late. They may not seem all that quick on paper but they move just fine. I managed to take a 2010 A4 Avant s-line (although it had a 1.8t) up to somewhere around 140mph, or more, on the Autobahn. I was most impressed it managed that to be honest. I could cruise all day at 100mph with the a/c on and the radio pumping out German pop radio. Even with all my fun on the 'bahn I still managed something around 30mpg, course it helps it was FWD. The brakes impressed me the most though. The 6spd was nice, although the clutch was lacking in feel. I loved it and wished I could have brought it home with me.

I agree with Vivi, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and reading up on forums, the A4 should be a fine ride and you should save plenty by going used.

Yup, to each their own. I always thought B6's were ugly. B7's I love, same with B8's.

I still prefer the bi turbo S4 though...drop in bigger turbos and you have a huuuuge performance gain. I tested out the B7 4.2L and the B8 v6 supercharged and really didn't like them as much as the bi turbo'd ones, but that's personal preference I guess.

I've got an 08 Jetta with the FSI and absolutely love it. It is a blast to drive, and now that I got it tuned it is even more surprising. Hell, even with the tune and driving like a college kid it gets 25+MPG in the city.

Wish i had the TSI though..

are the A4's now equip with DSG as a standard or do they still offer a normal auto trans ?

DSG MPG ratings are always a hair higher then 6speeds mainly due to gearing.

I like these things a lot, plus me getting 18-20mpg highway, makes me seriously want to look at a A3 quattro instead of my g35x.

A3 has DSG, A4 Quattro still has an ZF automatic trans. It was a 6spd '09-10 and is an 8spd '11 on. Don't go anywhere near the 2WD A4 with its CVT...it is ABYSMAL.

The S4 has a 7spd DSG or 6spd manual as its trans choices.

from what i remember A3 quattro = only DSG. A4 quattro could come with a manual trans. i like the A3's hatch and style.

I live where it snows so FWD audi doesn't make too much sense when i can get a cheaper passat/cc
