The 2.0T in my wife's A4 continues to impress me. This engine has been around for 6+ years in some form or another and is still putting up some impressive numbers. Her car is saddled with 3600lbs, an AWD system, and an automatic transmission, and still was showing 35.6 MPG average over a 500+ mile trip from Charleston, SC to Ft. Lauderdale, FL on Sunday where I was going 70+ on the highway the whole time. This included a short back road trip into St. Augustine for lunch that involved a ton of lights.
The car does overstate the gas mileage a bit, but based on my gas logs from fill-ups, we were doing about 34.41, so not too far off.
The car has impeccable highway manners, decent handling (this is not my M3, but it is more than acceptable), plenty of power for day to day driving, and a pretty slick automatic. I'm sure I could easily throw an extra MPG or two if I had talked my wife into the manual or we had the 2011 with the 8spd Automatic. And this was not hypermiling at all. I was driving over the speed limit the whole time and the air-conditioner was on 100% of the time along with radio and the moonroof while not driving on the highway.
Sure the new Hyundai Turbo 4 is very impressive and gets even better EPA numbers, but it also isn't saddled with as much weight or a power sapping AWD system. Not to mention that the engine is a lot newer design than the VAG 2.0T which has been around for 6+ years in various forms...so I'm pretty impressed with this engine. Bravo to VAG and to Hyundai for making such great engines for everyday use. GM, you need to put your 2.0T in more applications and I'm looking forward to seeing how Ford's EcoBoost 2.0T does.
