The 1.8T and 2.0T's all sound like a TDI, it's the lifters...nothing is wrong, it's just a token Audi/VW noise haha.

I thought most of the diesel sound came from the fact that the 2.0T is direct injection. Here's a cool video of APR bench testing some 2.0T injectors:

Right at around 30s you can hear it testing idle speed. Sound familiar?

I've got an 08 Jetta with the FSI and absolutely love it. It is a blast to drive, and now that I got it tuned it is even more surprising. Hell, even with the tune and driving like a college kid it gets 25+MPG in the city.

Wish i had the TSI though..

So if you got it tuned I assume the cam follower check came up OK?
What company tune did you get? Take advantage of the APR sale?

Haven't checked the cam follower yet (that is a project I'm planning to complete in the next week or two)

I got Revo tuned at WinterJam (show was in Daytona, so that helped). I paid $400 and got a handheld to switch/adjust the tune for $50.

Let me just say, tune+suspension and the car feels like a totally different animal

I replaced my cam follower when I got my 2007 GTI a few months ago. Black coating was slightly worn in the middle, but it wasn't that bad and the car has 60K miles.

Might as well replace it if you're gonna take stuff apart to inspect it.

Yeah, planning on it most likely. Its not exactly difficult to do, Ive done it on a few other MKVs.

The 2.0 in your B8 A4 is not a 6 year old design. It is part of the new EA888 family. Per wiki:

This latest EA888 family of internal combustion engines is anticipated to be an eventual complete replacement of the EA113 range. It was wholly designed and developed by AUDI AG. The only common feature with its predecessors is the sharing of the same 88 millimetres (3.46 in) cylinder spacing - which keeps the engine length relatively short, meaning it can be installed either transversely or longitudinally. Grey cast iron (GJL 250) remains the choice material for the cylinder block and crankcase, due to its inherent good acoustic dampening properties. This all-new EA888 range is notable for utilising simplex roller chains to drive the two overhead camshafts, instead of the former engines' toothed-rubber timing belt. Like the final developments of the former EA113 engine generation, all EA888s only use the Audi-created Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) direct injection. Furthermore, EA888 engines are also able utilise the Audi-developed 'valvelift' technology, which complements the existing variable valve timing. This new family of engines is scheduled to be universally available for all markets on five continents, within all marques of the Volkswagen Group. The former EA113 range still remains in production.

are the A4's now equip with DSG as a standard or do they still offer a normal auto trans ?

DSG MPG ratings are always a hair higher then 6speeds mainly due to gearing.

I like these things a lot, plus me getting 18-20mpg highway, makes me seriously want to look at a A3 quattro instead of my g35x.

Considering a similar change.. G35 to A3 TDI.

Commute is 30miles each way, the A3 is much more practical and gets 2x the mpg. I'm only holding out for the supposed 2012 refresh/redesign. Until then, maybe another car will tickle my fancy.

You will easily beat the EPA estimates in the TDI. I can get 42 mpg at 80 mph, if you drop it down to 65 or 60 you can easily hit the high 40s or 50s

I manage 32-34 over 100 miles @60-65mph to the beach in the '05 Comp G. With 2 kids, wife, and a load of beach stuff in the trunk. And 90+ degree temps. Weighs 3583lbs with no passengers.

I think that is pretty darn impressive. 3.8L pushrod V6. With a blower on it. lol Works for me. lol

I just picked up my 2008 A4 Special Edition S-Line on Thursday. Certified Pre-Owned, 29k miles, great shape. Quite an upgrade from my trade-in, 2003 20th AE GTI. Also scheduled to get the APR tuning test drive on Wednesday.

Nice...I definitely will consider the APR tune once the warranty runs out on this car. Since it is my wife's car, there is no immediacy, but I've heard the additional performance is great and the gas mileage really is not affected when you are not driving like a hoon.

Wait until you get a chance to chip it. Add much more power with minimal MPG drop. Also, if you think your Audi 2.0t sounds unrefined, check out the Sonata's 2.0t. That thing sounds like a chainsaw once you get pas 3k RPM.

The worst sounding car engine, imo, is the VQ35/37. I'm sorry to all the nissan/infinity owners but that engine sound has got to go. Not only does the engine sound like a tractor, but it is a LOUD tractor.

Yeah that's a very divisive series. I will say this though, after experiencing many of them :

An older, 2005 I think, G35 Auto sedan I took on a road trip and used as a company car for a time, was kind of irritating. Car ran really smoothly, but the exhaust drone was not all that pleasant. The interior kind of underwhelmed too, particularly when compared back-to-back with the '04 TL my brother had at the time.

A 2010 G37 Sedan I recently ran about in for a few hours was massively improved. I don't know what the noise sounded like from outside the car, but under average to slightly spirited driving around town, it was admirably quiet and not at all irritating.

I was kind of non-plussed about the 350Z exhaust note on the regular run of the mill models, dunno about Nismo. And I actually kind of liked the exhaust note on the 370Z I checked out. I really prefer a lot of others much more, like the new 5.0 and even the 3.7 on the Mustang V6, but it seemed pretty good. I still love hearing a well-tuned STI or LS setup And probably my favorite is old loping crackling big muscle fed by nice carb setups. That impossible to describe thunder that sounds like it's just begging for some time on WOT.

Once it start breaking down at 80k miles, yo're going to hate it.

Just had the 90K service done on my 07 Passat 2.0T (FSI) on Friday. No problems with this car at all. During the warranty period I had the instrument cluster replaced for graphic corruption during an extreme use case. I didn't ask for a replacement, the dealership checked the car (maybe some log files in the computer) and said they would replace it, no questions asked. Other than that I have had only scheduled service and the occasional recall item. And I am now on my 3rd set of tires. I'll service the brakes at around 100K (have 2-3 mm of material left).

As for the idle noise, I just got an ecoboost Flex on Thursday. Sounds remarkably similar to the VAG 2.0T. Guess it is characteristic of direct injection engine design.

Your speedometer is very optimistic

I had a rental A4 (I assume 2011?) last time I took my car in for service and the speedo showed 180 and still went on after that. The thing that really bugged me about it was 60 was at about 9 oclock with 0 at 7 oclock. There wasn't really enough space with the size of the dash to see how fast I was going. I knew I was somewhere between 70 and 80 but could have been +-3 either way from the 75 mph target.

I have a Jetta TDI so it might be a bit more than what you can get with the A3, but the drivetrain is the same so it should be pretty close.

I wish I lived in a city with (a) good Audi dealer(s) and/or import shops. Because I love the A4 and would love to get one, but I'm always worried about the reliability (which is why I have a Honda Accord now haha. Top trim with navi & V6, but still an Accord).
There's only one Audi dealership within 150 miles, and it has a horrible reputation. And from my experience with my parents driving Mercedes cars for 10 years and one myself for 5 years, the import shops here are pretty bad too.

Really? This bothered you the most about the car? The MPH can be shown in huge bold letters on the instrument cluster computer screen (as seen in my pic) so that there is no question what speed you are going. Even without that, I have never had a problem seeing how fast I was going based on the speedo.

I would rather have the MMI/Phone/Nav behind the steering wheel than looking at the MPH though.

Should be easy to see how fast you are going and there is simply no reason to have a 200mph speedo on this car.

My RS4/A6/S6 never had/have this problem. Seems they "fixed" something in the A4 that didn't need to be fixed.

What year did they switch to color behind the steering wheel instead of fixed orange, 2008?
