I don't think that would work. There are no 4.2 encoding standards that I know of so the positional audio performance I would think would be odd but obviously I am not an expert. Could you splice the the sub wires together into one separate wire and then plug that wire into the sound card jack? That is the only way I would think it would work but I don't how the bass on each subwoofer would come out!

Then either you used the wrong plugs on the soundcard, the soundcard isn't set correctly yet, or you're playing something (game or music player) than doesn't support 4-channel sound.

If the soundcard has an analog 4.0-speaker mode it doesn't really know or care whether the 2 speaker sets are 2.0 or 2.1 (though it may let you set "small" or "large").

If it has a 4.1 mode, or if both of your 2.1 speakers insist on getting 3 distinct audio channels from the souncard (L, R, bass) instead of just L, R then you might have problems.

why wouldn't it work?
You would have two analog plugs, one goes into the front, one goes into the surround jack on the soundcard.

But a 4.2 setup in this case is the same as just a 4 channel setup, because there are no discreet sub channels. It would work the same as any other 4 channel setup, except now your rear channel has it's own subwoofer.
