I'm looking for a new 2.1 or 2.0 setup to replace my aging Klipsch Promedia 2.1. It should be good for music and video, with casual gaming a bonus. Doesn't need to be 'audiophile' quality. Hoping for something cheaper than Klipsch that still does an adequate job, but willing to rebuy Klipsch if that's still the best option. Probably around $150 would be the max I'd like to pay, but would prefer <$100.

Monoprice, Logitech, any others? Specific models I should check out?

they're a lot cleaner sounding than the klipsch (I have the promedia 2.1 as well), but you won't get nearly as much bass out of the swans.

the m-audio av40 are also supposed to be good (~$150).

In this price range you could also look into getting a cheapish class T amplifier (~$20-40) and some bookshelf speakers like the pioneer andrew jones when they go on sale (~$50-100).

I have a set of the Pioneer SP-BS21s. I picked them up at Wal-Mart for $40 on clearance. They run off of a little digital amp, the SMSL SA-36 that I got from Amazon. I read a bunch of reviews of the speakers and found several people had performed FR measurements. Using that info, I built an EQ correction from about 400-20k and ear-balled from 400 down.

I think they sound great. I have $75 total into a setup that unless you need it really loud, I don't think you could do a whole lot better than for <$500. Having said that, I'm trying to talk the wife into getting me a set of modified Pio 22s from Philharmonic Audio. He modifies the crossover and installs a better Vifa tweeter. I think they're around $160/pair.

There's a site called noaudiophile that reviews, measures and DSP corrects really affordable stuff. He's where I started to build my EQ profile. Give it a google.

Good luck.
