I am needing extra storage space for nothing but MP3`s and am wondering which would be the better solution...? I can buy 2-40gig at around $85 ea or 1-80gig at $195 this drive(s) would be nothing but a storage unit (have 2-45gig 75GXP`s for games and everything else). I recently was loaned an 80gig Maxtor with a little more than 65gigs of MP3`s (full albums)... Just wanting to know which would be the best way to go...?

Thanks...

personally I would get the 80 gig hdd because then there is more space if I want to add more hdd's later.

I was gonna say run 2 40's and run a raid array, but since this is just for storage...go with the 80. It will be easier to manage.

the bigger drives run slower... get 2 of the smaller ones... also, if that one big one fails, you're sol. that's if you have space for the extra hd i guess...

but why not save $25???

edit: yea, i guess a big one would be easier to manage...

agree with crazyjoekuta, go for the 2 HDs, 4 hardisks won't be too hard than a 3, management wise-it shouldnt be an issue. Just make sure you have enough power to supply.

If money is not a problem then purchase the 80G with higher RPM.

If ONE of the TWO drives in a RAID array fails (RAID 0) you've lost all your data.

So that's 2x the possibility of losing everything, but 1/2 the possibility of losing a phsyical hard disk.

Hmm!

I'd go with the one 80gig for your uses. I faced the same dillema recently, I went with the larger, single drive.

Especially for storage.

2 drives is definitely more flexible and safer than one. If you don't plan to upgrade for a while again, go with the 2 drives.

How about two 80's, or better yet, two of the new 100 gig Maxtors (mirrored)?

I would go with 1-80, because it's only for storage, and 40 gigs or an 80 gig will cover it. The 80 gig would be safer also.

Another vote for 1-80gb. Speed shouldn't be an issue for storing mp3's and you will have less heat and more space in your case. As it is, those large drives are pretty quick due to the fact that they have such high density platters (not faster then the two drives in RAID but fast enough).

Good Luck,

I'd go the (2)-40G non-raid route...cheaper, save the extra money for your next purchase.

Pro: If (1) drive should fail you will still have the other for backup.
Con: a 41G movie file wont fit.

Now in a year or two when single files are 41gigs a peice the 80G would be the way to go, but by then the 400Gig drives will be out.
