Ok, i have this Setup of a , MSI PT880 board, 2.4A retail 1mb cache chip and im using the kingston hyperx pc4000. I have a few questions and comments.

1) the only way i seem to be able to overclock this thing is to change my memory setting to DDR500. that gets me a 2.9ghz @ 1.45v. I want to achieve the 3.3ghz that i saw on the review over @ hardocp
2) when i go to setup the ram to a 1:1, i just want to make sure that means to set it to DDR266? then change the fsb?
3) What bios settings could steer me towards 3.3ghz as seen in that review?
4) what ram are you folks running and @ what timings, that led you to 3.0+ ghz overclocks on these 2.4a's?

Thanks in advance for the guidance.

Matt

Tried all of that. and on this msi board theres no pci lock, but you can specify 66mhz agp/33 pci all the way up to 100mhz.

Heh, I have this motherboard. I also used to have this CPU. I bought the motherboard before the HardOCP article came out. I was already eyeing the CPU and after the article came out I bought one. Unstable on my board, plus got a really crappy overclock. 165MHz FSB. 166Mhz would result in no POST. My 2.53 Northwood is currently running at 175MHz FSB on the same setup. Since it was unstable even at default speeds, I RMA'd it (Newegg gave me a refund instead of a replacement). AFTER the CPU was already gone, I found out there was a new BIOS update that supposedly fixed stability issues with Prescotts.

On my board I run a pair of Original Samsung 512MB PC2700. I have the memory set to 266(1:1) so that at 175MHz FSB the memory is overclocked a bit at 350MHz. You have to change the memory setting before changing the FSB, otherwise your FSB will reset back to default as soon as you change the memory setting. My timings are... uh, I think 2.5/3/3/7.

I wrote up a mini-review of my impressions on my MSI PT880 board:
REVIEW: MSI PT880 Neo-LSR, very good board but voltage impaired

Lemme try to answer some of your questions directly:
1) Overclocking involves some luck. No matter how many people reach a certain MHz, your setup may not. Accept the fact - that's the difference between you being possibly unhappy and being possibly pleasantly suprised.
2) Yes, set the RAM to 266 first, then pump up the FSB. You'll want to find the limit of your CPU before pushing the RAM even though your RAM is fast.
3) Default BIOS settings are a good place to start. You'll want to find your CPU's limits with default BIOS settings and lowest RAM settings.
4) Well, I answered the RAM question above.

G'luck with your overclock.

MIS has a new bios in the works to fix this problem but it's not offically released yet. Working with a guy form the ABX Forums I was able to get a copy and it works great. I'm running at 3.2ghz with my sata drives!

Heres a link if you want to download and try it.

www.jipsytyrs.com/7008v153.zip

I used the MSI live update 3 utililty to install (flash) it and just replaced the files from the 7008v153.zip file with the 7008v140 files it was going to use. (Or just use the flash utilities...)

Good luck~
