2.4c problems

i have p4p800 and 2.4c@3ghz. i can run memtest fine. but prime95 fails quickly with a rounding error. it could either be the temp or the voltage i think. mbm tells me my temp is 28-30c on idle. when running prime95 my temp reaches 50c. mbm tells me my voltage is 1.6v but when running prime95 my voltage varies and drops down to 1.50.

my cpu has pack date 5/13 and fpo/batch 3312A296 (made in costa rica?)

i think it's the temp, what do you think? thanks.

I have the same cpu and motherboard, but I'm not using the retail hsf and my batch number is L311Axxx.

I can reach 266fsb at 3:2 memory ratios (266mhz memory setting) 2.5-3-3-7-8 using 1.6vcore. My temps are 28 idle and 35 f/l using Thermalright SLK900U with Panaflo 92mm H1A fan.

Thor what motherboard did you get those readings from?

i'm running an IT7 MAX2 Version 2, P4. 2.53ghz at 3.06ghz, at 1.325volts (yes it's undervolted !), runing a zalman 7000CU heatsink/fan. And its still giving me 42 idle and about 50C fullload. What am I doing wrong? Does your heatsink fan combo make THAT much of a difference? And is it noisy? Where can i get that combo and test it out? Thanks

It's the same board as the originating poster. An Asus P4P800 non-deluxe model. I think the thermal diode reads a little lower than usual for Asus, but who knows. I'm also using MBM5 software to monitor the temps.

Hrm, is there anything I might be doing wrong? The zalman doesn't seem to be FIRMLY attached. I can still wiggle it around :/ strange, that's how it installs though

AMBIENT TEMPS must be taken into consideration...

no, his hs/fan is not that much better than yours... A. his room is probably cooler and or B. your mobo might over read temps.

amoralist, check and see that you have changed your memory ratio... ie to something like 5:4, so that your memory does not run out of spec. Just because your computer wont run a bench does not necessarily mean that it is your processor's fault. Most people are getting 3.3+ on air cooling... I am sitting pretty at 3.12... which, I might just push it more if I get a new videocard.

also, make sure your pci/agp is locked. You may also want to increase the voltage to your memory or processor. Most people say 1.7 is the point of no return for pentiums, but I would stay below 1.6. And so far as I know, most people set ram at max voltage.

Ambient temps are 21-24 degrees. I think the bigger picture is the fan I am using. 92mm Panaflo H1A, quiet , but pushes a lot of air.

thanks savage. the mem is running within spec 5:4 ratio, and the pci/agp is locked.
i just ordered some $30 hs/fan from newegg. i think it thermaltake spark 7 or something.
anyway hopefully that will bring the high temp down to 40c.
i'm only running my core at 1.55v. i guess i should bump it further, but i think that means
the cpu will run hotter. so i'll probably wait for the new cooler.

amoralist (notice you live in Ojai, I used to live in Ventura. Now in LA)

My 2.4c is product code-SL6WF, fpo/batch-L309A586 Malaysian pack date 4/4

I've been running it all night like this-

2.4c @ 3.4 1.53volt 283fsb ambient 27-28c, idle temps 33-34c, load 51-53c using stock heatsink and Artic Silver 3(gotta get AS Ceramique)
p4p800 deluxe 1005 BIOS
2x256MB Kingston HyperX 3500 @ 187MHz 2/3 ratio 2-2-2-8-8 @ 2.65v (gonna take that back to stock soon and see how things run).
AGP & PCI at spec
Enermax 365 series PSU running rock stable with 4hdds, a radeon 9700 (non-pro), DVD and CD-R drives 2 (soon to be 3) 12cm case fans.

My temps are stable and consistent in the sense that as soon as I crank up Prime, Sandra Burn-in etc the temps rise quickly to 120F (51c) and then slowly climb to 129-133F (52-53c). Once there tho they remain consistent. I'm pretty sure I can go quite a bit higher, but gotta hold off for now since I don't have my watercooling up yet. As is, yesterday and today have been the first good OCing days (high 70s to low 80s F). Once the ambient rises back into the 90s I'm dropping back to 3.2GHz. that was solid at below stock voltage with 2-3c better temps.

update:

i bought the spark7 from newegg. my high temp has dropped from 50c to 35c and i pass prime95 now.

although the new cooler helps, i noticed i didn't have the stock cooler making full contact with the cpu before.
so that was probably the reason the stock cooler didn't work for me. when i pulled off the stock cooler to
replace it, about 1/3 of the bottom of the cooler didn't have arctic silver on it. i guess i didn't put enough
compound on.

thanx for the comments though.
