I've got 2 2.5 sata drives that I want to use for external storage but I have no clue what enclosure to get. Too many to choose from on Amazon. USB 3.0?

Thanks.

What are you looking for exactly?
Metal, plastic, need a fan, needs external power brick or has its own power (from USB), does it need to be shock resistance (usually has rubber mounts), and so on...

I've had luck with a Sabrent 2.5 external usb 2.0 enclosure. It's aluminum except for the end which connects to the 2.5 inch drive. It's still in use today

I'm not sure about the 3.0 usb versions but it seems like Sabrent is still getting decent to good reviews for the most part on newegg.

Out of all of that, power from the usb port like the seagate external I have now.

I have been using the MiniPro enclosure
I think that's a bit over kill for what I need.

Was looking at this Sabrent. 3.0 backward compatible to 2.0. I have 1 old machine (USB 1.0 (I have no idea)) Would it not work on that machine if it is 1.0? For $13, it can't hurt to try.

I can't say but perhaps the 59 questions answered link just below the description and to the right of the reviews link on the page you linked has the answer.

That's the one I have. I bought it before USB 3.0 became a standard. I like it because most of the enclosure is aluminum which allows for good passive cooling.
Also the end that connects to the driver interface fits fairly snug in the enclosure so when I was semi-frequently swapping drives in and out of it was easy and pain free.

Before I found a drive to use with it for the long term (and used the included screws to secure the interface end into the enclosure) I would use the enclosure to either try and recover information from dying laptop drives or use it to copy an image of a laptop drive to a newer driver for an upgrade on a semi-regular basis.

Maybe I'm an outlier but I've gotten my money's worth out of the Sabrent enclosure I have.
