Good price on notebook laptop enclosure. Looks as if it will support up to 80gb, but make sure you laptop hard drive's height is less than 9.5mm.

To be picky, make sure you laptop hard drive's height is no more than 9.5mm. I don't believe mass market (or any?) 2.5" drives are less than 9.5mm.

I don't think they make the 12.5mm drives anymore, but you'll have to take into consideration that some people might have old spare hard drive lying around that is pretty old. Better safe then sorry.

Does the hard drive get its power from the usb or does it need an external power source?

i just ordered 1 of these

BTW the one i have now has a problem when i hibernate
the computer still provides some power to the usb post while in hibernate which makes the drive try to keep running but its can't there is not enough power so watch out this might be limited to my other one (this the one talked about here) or it might be my computer or all of them

thank you

Alcor Micro, Realtek, and numerous other chip makers release generic-O-lized drivers for their OEMs. Yes, I made that word up. They probably didn't rename a thing.

Judging by the reference to "ALI" and "ali" in the driver properties, I would put my money on an Acer Labs controller chip.

I received mine today. Works works great with my Hitachi 40GB. PNP wtih XP. The chipset on this enclosure is Myson. Hope this helps.

Did anyone have any luck getting this to work with Windows Server 2003? I can't get the OS to recognize it.

Thanks...

Regarding dell's... just some info

We have some Inspiron 1050 and 1100(?)'s we use for training.....

they have two usb ports on the back.... the top port won't reckognize a usb keybard, and the bottom port doesn't recognize our barcode scanner pens..... (power drawn is under 100ma each)

Go figure.....it's a Dell

http://www.starterupsteve.com/flash/html/cheap_tech_support.shtml

(total of 50 laptops...same results with all laptops using 2 different manufacturer of keyboards, and 2 types of barcode scanners).

So the guy's post above about the Dell300m doesn't suprise me....thought I'd comment.

Looks like the enclosure uses a proprietary USB interface going by the pics on newegg. Can someone who's received this confirm that? Sucks if you lose the cable, but I suppose for the price you could afford to buy a new one.

It's a standard USB type A Male to type A Male cable.

The additional split off is merely for power, if the power supplied by 1 USB port isn't enough.

But the silver one is only $8.99 now

Aye, just grabbed myself one since it is now a buck cheaper =)
Thanks OP
