Publix website

Click on "Weekly Flyer" to open the sales ad an go to page 11. In the upper right is the coupon.

If you live in the southeast go down to your local Publix, grab a weekly flyer and pay $40 for each $50 gift card good at Shell and BP. With gas prices down to nearly $2.50 a gallon (here in Florida) the 20% discount equates out to about $2 a gallon.

I could be mistaken ... but I believe that Publix modified their on-line sales ad to remove the coupon. I checked my local store ad (Orlando) and it was there this morning ... but it is gone now.

If you really want to try this deal just go to your local store and grab a copy of the weekly ad. They have already been printed and unless they were pulled they should still be there. Look on page 10 or 11 in the upper right-hand corner.

I stopped at two stores on my drive home from work and both were sold out of the BP cards ... but one had a lot of Shell cards left. This is probably because there are so many BP stations around here. Later, on a lark, the wife and I drove to another store just 5 minutes away and lo-and-behold they had about 20 of each still available. My wife and I each picked up two. We were in the store for about 10 minutes and saw a number of people taking at least one.

The cards came up at face value upon checkout but we paid only $40 each after the discount was applied.

Good luck ...

Nice catch. Went back to check the Madison, AL ad....strange blank area at the top of page 10.

I'll be heading to the store to check this out. I'd like to pick up about ten. Quicken tells me I've spent $1600 in fuel, YTD, so 25% return on $400 in two or three months is pretty good in my book.

This deal IS valid in South Florida. Every location has its own stupid rules. One of the stores in my area has a limit of 1 card per person but is not even asking for a coupon. Another one has a limit of 3 and lets you use their own photocopied coupons.

Both stores don't have any $50 gas cards left on the rack. They keep them at the registers and/or at the CS desk.

Deal ends today, I believe. I'm up to 11 cards....stupid store rules. Tried to buy 20 when I first found them (no limits on the coupon). That store promptly said, two/person/day. Went back the next day and got 4 with no questions asked. The other nearby store is one/person/day. Of course, the lunchtime crowd doesn't know you were there for breakfast.

Between me and the wife, I expect to pick up another 8 or so today.

There are probably 50+ cards left on the shelves at the Harvest, AL location. I just can't believe they've lasted a week. **Guaranteed** return of about 22% (Shell and BP run about 2-4% higher than other stations around here). If I didn't have the cash handy, I'd take it from my Roth, for cryin' out loud.

It's actually good until tomorrow. Thursday is the start of a new week at Publix.

Not sure about the math. The price premium at BP/Shell would actually minimize your actual savings.

For example, let's say the price is $2.50/gal at a NoName gas station. Let's say it is 4% higher at BP or Shell, thus $2.60/gal. Your card gives you 20% off at BP/Shell. So:

$2.60 - 20% = $2.08 (discounted price at BP/Shell)
($2.50 - $2.08 / $2.50) x 100% = 16.5% (actuall savings over a NoName station).

I believe that cyberia is correct. If BP and/or Shell are selling at a premium then your savings (from the 20%) are reduced. Luckily for me the BP on my way to work has the lowest prices ($2.47 at last look) in the area. that means that I am paying less than $2.00 a gallon!

A note on deal expiration ... my local Publix has extended the deal until 22 July because they ran out of cards.

This thread is pretty old.. but is there any similar discount on gas at Publix in Miami, FLorida? I am planning to travel Miami for vacation so thinking of taking advantage of this.

It's still July 2009 on my calendar. Am I in the right universe?

My store told me that (a) they are out of cards, (b) they were supposed to get more in but they were dropped from the shipment, and (c) if you have a coupon, they will honor it next week.

You both may have missed that I used the term "return", as in Return on Investment, which is how I'm treating this deal....as an investment.

I invest $800 in cards, I get back $1000 in gas, for a return of $200.....a 25% gain on my investment.

Shell and BP are 2-4% higher priced than the stations I'd normally use, so that reduces my net ROI my approx. 3%, making ROI ~22%.

=====

Also, deal ended last night here. Hit up a sold-out, limit 2 Publix 5 minutes before closing and asked manager if I could buy up his stock of $25 cards since the deal was ending. He said sure, so I picked up 18 of the $25 cards. In total, got just under $2k worth of cards. So it should take about a year to realize the 22% gain; which is considerably better than the ~1%-5% savings accounts and most banks.
