2 days in Toronto - best places to eat and sightsee?

Hello all!

I'll be spending 2 days in Toronto for a road trip, and was wondering what my fellow ATOTers recommend for cool places to visit and eat at. My wife and I will be traveling with others that are on a budget. So a local greasy spoon / neighborhood treasure is what I'm looking for.

Regarding places to visit - we are already sold on the hockey hall of fame. What else would you suggest? We are all fans of history so historic landmarks and neighborhoods would be welcome. Places we are looking at so far:

CN Tower (worth it?)
QueenWest town
The AGO
Maybe one of the historical churches / castles?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We'll be there for 2 full days, so we want to spend the time wisely.

CN tower is cool. the only thing that sucked is that when I was there it was extremely overcast.

Niagara Falls is only 90 minutes away

There are tons of good places to eat with reasonable prices here. Depends on what sort of food you're after. Probably want to stick to downtownish locations because the city is huge if you get into the whole area.

The Stockyards on St. Clair West at Humewood has great food and fairly reasonable prices. It fits the bill of a greasy spoon with amazing burgers, fried chicken etc.

I would skip the CN tower. It's just a tall building you go up, look out a window of and then leave. Not worth the time and lineups. The AGO is definitely worth a look. Historical churches would be St. Michaels and St. James.

As far as neighbourhoods, Queen West is good for shopping and pretty interesting if you haven't been there before. I think Kensington Market would be more fun though and there are some cool places to eat there as well.

I've come to realize that while Toronto may have a bunch of excellent restaurants, there isn't anything I can think of that is location-unique like a cabane à sucre in Quebec.

As far as neighbourhoods, Queen West is good for shopping and pretty interesting if you haven't been there before. I think Kensington Market would be more fun though and there are some cool places to eat there as well.

Kensington Market is a dive of a place filled with hipsters. Don't go there.

The Distillery District is worth checking out. Lots of bistros, breweries, and micro-distilleries in a historic setting. Food will be more expensive there. As for cheap greasy spoons, the only ones I know of are out in the GTA. Guess you could visit Hooker Harvey's for the ultimate T-Dot experience. :awe:
