2-door sedans...

Having two doors on a small coupe is understandable. But what's the point of 2 doors on a mid-size/large sedan (Chevrolet Monte Carlo).

I had the displeasure of riding in one recently and it's an annoyance to get in and out of the car and that's putting it mildly. It's even harder to get out of the backseat in a very short amount of time, for example in an emergency situation.

Regardless of the beauty/power of the car, I just don't understand this particular design element.

That being said, I own a Tahoe so I don't think it's an issue for my passengers.

Negative. Calling those things doors is like calling the second bit on the side door of my cargo van a door. It's simply a movable panel to enlarge the door so you can fit things (such as a person, in the RX8's case) into it more easily.

No, it is difficult to get in/out of the front seat of an RX-8. The rear seat is the place to stash the last 30 years of your life that you pretend haven't happened yet as you're driving the RX-8.

2-door sedan (IMHO)

There a reason why the Solara looks so much different than the Camry (other than the fact that they went from boringly bland to outrageously ugly).

A sedan could be 2 or 4 doors but a coupe is strictly 2 doors.

I was riding in the Monte Carlo btw.

Regardless, what's the logic behind this design? I mean when there is so much space in the back, the same as a 4-door sedan, then why not have doors at the back as well?

And it's not like the 2 doors make the entrance for the driver easier.

Edit: Take a look at the interior of the Monte Carlo.

Negative. people do not fit in the back "seat" of an RX-8. i know: i've tried and failed to fit my meager 145 pound frame into one. i suppose it makes it easier for your chiuahua to jump inside, though.

I dunno, the first gen solara's weren't bad. this latest crop tho.. toyota tried, and failed.

Well, one archaic defintion of sedan refers to the number of seats--actually, the number of rows of seats which is in this case, 2--regardless of the number of doors.

Since WWII, however, sedan has become synonymous with 4-door

Automakers often make 2 door versions of their sedans that are structurally and dimensionally identical. The BMW two door 3 series cars are just two door versions of sedans. Basically welding shut one pair of doors doesn't make a car a coupe! I agree that "coupe" versions of sedans are usually pointless. The previous generation M3 had a four door version, which wasn't any longer, taller, or heavier than the coupe, and was actually stiffer.

They look better and you can ride with the windows down even on the interstate without the wind bugging you, front seat only of coarse. With a 4 door if you put the windows down the wind hits the door post does a 90 degree bend and slams right into the side of your head. I've never really had a problem getting into the back seat of them.

Not in my Camry. I can cruise at 70MPH with my moonroof open, front windows closed and back windows all the way down and have a NICE breeze come through and not even need the A/C. Even better, you can still carry on a converstation.

Coupes sell because of their looks--People think they look sporty. Let me flame the discussion by adding hatchbacks. I don't know why hatchbacks are not popular in the USA.

Coupes=popular in USA
Hatchbacks=popular in the rest of the world

How tall are you? At one point, i had both rear seats on my Rx-8 filled with girls traveling on a 6hrs trip and they said there were enough space back there. I carry my co-workers to lunch on the back seat regularly, guys/girls - vary from 110lbp to 160lbs (no oversized ppl though) they all fit fine and no complaints. The only problem is if you have cramped parking space... th passengers have to "maneuver" their way our of the rear door to the front side and close the rear doors

2-doors sedans are simply a 2-door car that allows 4 full-sized people to sit comfortably. Whether they are comfortable getting in and out is another issue, lol.
