Last week...on the Discovery Channel...there were two great documentaries about
Al Qaeda, Bin Laden, and the steps that led up to this war.

Basically, it boils down to a handful of major events:

1. Russia invades Afghanistan in the 1980's...and by the early 90's had to withdraw in
defeat.

2. Bin Laden, at that time, was a rebel fighter in Afghanistan, and saw the Soviet withdrawl
as a sign that the "Superpowers can be beaten".

3. Al Qaeda was formed during this, and it's still thought that the "Official" Al Qaeda
has only 300 "sworn" members. The rest, like Zarqawi are just fringe nuts, looking
for a way to bolster their somewhat sick egos, criminal lifestyle, etc. through
publicity, and the leading name in Terror. (aka Al Qaeda)

4. At the end of the Afghanistan confict...things calmed down, and with no cause to
rattle sabers to, Al Qaeda may have died out by the mid-90's...but...

5. Saddam Hussein invades Kuwait.

6. Fresh from his "victory" over the Soviets, Bin Laden, offers his services and his
rag-tag Afghan based army to the Saudi, (Bin Laden is from S.A) Royal Family in
order to pry Saddam out of Kuwait, and the Saudi area.

7. Osama's offer is rejected by the Saudi's, and in fact his offer is even ridiculed.
This was not the mountainous areas of Afghanistan, but the flat, open, desert.

8. Osama/Bin Laden's ego and pride are crushed, but what really infuriates him,
and gives his "Al Qaeda" a "cause", is the fact that the Saudi's took advantage
of the U.S.'s agreement to get Saddam out of Kuwait.

9. Like a hurt child...Bin Laden makes a mental note to wage war against the
"infidels", aka the U.S.

10. The terror attacks started small...a U.S. consulate...the first attack on the W.T.C.,
the terror atack on the U.S.S. warship Cole...then 9/11.

=========================================

Basically, what you have in Bin Laden is a rich, spoiled child,...

taking his aggressions out on the U.S. and any of it's allies, because he was rejected
by the Saudi's in the Kuwait deal.

And just like Hitler before him, he uses the guise of "jihad"...a "Holy War", as an
excuse to try and repair his hurt and bruised ego.

Hitler used WW II as a cover for his own private war, and systematic extermination actions against the Jews.

Like I said...this is just a rough sketch of what happened.

I watched some of the programming and my conclusion is a little different. Al Qaida literally means a data base. Really a list of people, who have lists of people. Sure, they had training camps in Afganistan and they received covert US help to drive the Russians out.
Only Bin Ladens Father is from Saudi Arabia if I recall, I believe that his mother is Syrian.
He is absolutely not a spoiled child. He is probably the most passionate person/activist in the cause of radical Islam. He was educated in the USA as an Engineer and his family owned, maybe still owns construction businesses.
The hi-jackers knew pretty much exactly what was needed to bring the towers down. That's why they chose flights that were loaded with thousands of gallons of fuel.

Zarqawi is not a nut, to think of Al Qaida members as nuts is wrong. A 'nut' would not plan, with such precision, the 9/11 attacks for the best part of 5 years. The so called 'muscle' highjackers practiced slitting the throats of camels to be sure that they carried out their part of the mission. Bin Laden has been cut of from his fortune (some 300 million dollars) for quite some time. Needless to say he receive funds from amny Islamic sources. One fact is sure, Al Qaida made money, and lots of it, through the stock market following 9/11. I would hazard a guess that they also made money following the attacks on London and the issues that those attacks created.

I've argued this very same line of reasoning before in here based on those and other documentaries on OBL. The crowd who sees OBL as the altruistic leader of some great Arab cause and whose actions have nothing to do with his own ego and personal bitterness won't agree with you though.

Very spoliled, very rich and very much a child. Considering that it took 100 years to free slaves and 150 years to let women vote I would say that the USA is absolutely a poor example of a democratic nation. Racial issues are still no better today than they were 50 years a go.

al Qaeda literally means "The Base" as in foundation or core, not database. OBL sees AQ as the foundation of the great Islamic fundamentalist revolution which he believes will sweep the entire world.

I think theres quite a bit more to it than that.

Bin Laden has been a hater of the Saudi royal family for a long time, I dont think their actions during the first Gulf War could have been the single motivator.

Thats a rather ignorant statement. Minority owned businesses have doubled since 2000

Israel pisses him off just like most Arabs. If they really gave a crap about Palestinians they wouldn't have kicked them out of their own countries on so many occasions.

He would hate them...he was kicked out of the country a coupla' decades ago.

In fact, the only country that would have him at one time was Afghanistan, now they
don't want him...
