I just bought Win2k for $5 at my university, but after reading a few threads here, I am still hesitant about installing it. I am building a new system with an Athlon 700, about 128MB Mushkin PC133, Geforce DDR, and a Quantum Fireball LM 30G 7200 HD. I play quite a bit of UT, and am getting more into Deus Ex, along with a bunch of other games. I do a little graphic design (both 2d and 3d) but not enough to be considered a power-user-designer type.

So should I use win2k instead of Win98SE? Or should I go with winME? Which brings me to my second question, where do I obtain WinME? Thanks.

I don't think WinME is currently available in a retail capacity and most likely won't be until September time. Unless, of course, you or a friend buy a new PC in the next few months or so since it is going to be the new MS home desktop standard.

I personally regret installing Win2k on my machine. Since I am an avid TFC player, it pains me endlessly. I am experiencing multiple, annoying issues that ruin what could be excellent games.

Also, I find that a combination of certain apps crashes Win2k a lot. If I open WinAmp, FireWorks and Photoshop, Win2k likes to just blue screen or freeze. I thought it might be my machine, but this happens on all my PCs (Intel & VIA/AMD based).

I would rather have stuck WinNT 4 or even Win98 rather than this nuisance. The only reason I would ever recommend using Win2k is that it supports ACPI very well (better than Win98) or if you are running a Win2k server. Otherwise, in my opinion, pass it up until a service pack comes out.

If you're going to be playing alot of games winME is a better choice. Also Deus Ex does run on win2k, but not extremely stable, it will close on me AT LEAST once a day while I'm playing. It will be a better bet to wait a year until more games support win2k and MS finally releases service patches to fix the known bugs in win2k.

For that machine Id definately go Win2K, its way more stable than Win9x, and nVidias drivers are excellent, there is virtually no performance difference between 9x and 2K in OpenGL on my machine, dont know about D3D since I dont play any D3D games.
