If you read through the article, you can see the defense may have something to defend with though for the guy. They are trying to infer that the computer was not even turned on and that during the time of the alleged streaming of the roommate, the guy supposedly streaming is doing a constant text session from 2 am to 5 am with topics that have nothing to do with the room mate nor the supposed spying being done. Meaning that he may have originally intended to do the spying session, but actually never did anything.

as i understand, the girl pleaded guilty and cut a deal. The guy is not a citizen and pleading guilty will mean deportation. Thus he is taking his chances in court. But public opinion is heavily against him.

The testimony can only be largely circumstantial--potential evidence tampering, maybe, in that he clearly fudged his twitter account by deleting messages and trying to obscure the time stamps, and the evolution of his facebook/twitter comments.

hell, every single one of his friends that testified in the initial trial, and with detectives, call him a singular asshole, but not a homophobe.

The Wei girl who was charged with him really doesn't like Ravi--from past experience--their association in this incident is simply one of those things that randomly happened in the week or two when that semester began.

Anyway, it will probably be difficult to convict someone based on what one can only assume his intentions were, and that they are a dickhead. And Tyler killed himself--it wasn't murder. All of Tyler's comments, even after learning about the webcam, suggest that this wasn't something that bothered him to the degree of suicide. How it looks right now: Ravi is a supreme dick, essentially guilty of being a major douchebag. I think it's quite clear to the casual observer that there was very real intent to make the video public to everyone--he scheduled an open viewing party, posted and chatted endlessly about it, and only "cancelled" when he realized that Tyler was aware of the spying. Anything remotely apologetic from this guy came after he was discovered.

Regardless, justice is such that one can not be prosecuted for being a historic douchebag, and possible intent to action in a non-violent manner is hardly a sticky charge (of course, IANAL).

It's both hard to imagine this dick not receiving any kind of punishment, but also hard to imagine him being punished for what actually happened. Perhaps a lot more hinges on the contents of that undisclosed note. Outside of Tyler writing "I killed myself because my Roommate Ravi spied on me with his webcam," I can't imagine anything putting this guy in prison.


And yeah, I forgot that much of the reporting was that He was outed by the webcam, which is patently false. He came out to his parents a week or two prior to moving into the dorm. Ravi had conducted some serious online investigations of this roommate prior to moving in, and had learned of his homosexuality himself (actually, I think he mistook Tyler for someone else--but he was expecting his roommate to be gay)

I think what we are left with is the bolded statement from Fern--the contemporary version of a young dickbag's college prank. A childish idiot with no perspective doing the types of things that millions of people at that age have done and will always do, just that stakes seem to be much higher these days.

It's also funny that for his supposed technical savvy, Ravi was a colossal idiot with his online persona. Tyler had known of Ravi's investigation into him prior to moving in, frustration over Tyler being gay, intent to spy, the spying, everything--simply by reading Ravi's copious tweets on the subject.

Just another example of the self-serving nature of social media making complete, insular fools out of most people--especially the young who are now raised in the me-me-me-me! reality that is trying to destroy the notion of privacy.
