The company for which I work is currently recruiting for 2 full time perm software engineering positions. These positions are open partly to replace me, since I have recently been promoted. I don't have the exact position requirements, but below should be a pretty accurate summary (with the most important qualifications at the top):

<the requirements are different from what I originally listed - see the update below>

This is a large company located in eastern Tennessee (Erwin), near the North Carolina state line. We are about 45 minutes from Asheville, NC, 2 hours from Knoxville TN, and 20 minutes from Johnson City, TN. I can't go into the nature of our business too much, but we are a government contractor whose primary function is chemical processing.

I don't know what the salary ranges are for these positions, but the cost of living in this area is fairly low, and with that in mind my salary has always been really really good. Plus this company offers a whole host of benefits that are really good.

If anyone needs a job and is qualified, send me a pm and I'll find out what you need to do to apply. If you have other questions, post them in this thread and I'll answer them as best as I can.

-Dean

UPDATE 4/4/2006:
I just spoke with the department head, and I have a much better idea of what they are wanting (most important requirements near the top):

-the ability to acquire and maintain both DOE and NRC security clearances (at the company's cost. If you already have a clearance, then you are already a step up.)

-ASP.NET (vbscript, javascript) and other .NET languages (c#, vb)

-strong TSQL skills, as well as general proficiency with MS SQL Server

-Contrary to what I originally posted, you DO NOT have to already know PowerBuilder. However, you will probably have to become familiar with it if you accept a position here.

Generally, we are looking for someone with some programming experience - entry level programmers probably will not be considered.

I was told that our company will sometimes offer a signing bonus / relocation package for people that we really want.

I have a "job duties" document I can post if anyone is interested. Also, I now know what the target salary range is. Let me know if you are curious. Finally, if you want to know more about this locale (what there is to do, etc.), let me know.

I don't know. I imagine that they would for the right individual. In the morning I'll ask and post back here.

EDIT: yes - see the original post's 4/4/2006 update.

The head of IS told me this morning that they are hoping to pay in the 50k's range.

For some reason I feel like I need to defend that amount, even though I don't have a horse in this race, so read on:

While that may seem like a low salary for a large city, the cost of living in Erwin, TN is so low that it is a really nice amount - you will be able to live very comfortably here with that. Look it up on one of the internet salary calculators and you will see what I mean.

For anyone that doesn't know, that area is extremely cheap to live in. I just finished my undergrad at ETSU. Housing is very cheap, land is cheap, and those clearances are worth a fair share.

Good luck hiring.

PS. I know who you work for

Its not actually a secret, but I want to make sure all resumes come through me and go directly to the IS department head. I don't get any commission or anything like that for them, but I can ensure that they go to the right person.

So please, if you know where I work (as some of you do), send resumes directly to me if you want your best chance of being accepted.

And if you want to know more about the company, pm me and I'll send you more information than you can shake a stick at.

I wasn't going to snitch

Going through HR often times makes it harder to get a job in many companies. Why do you think most reqs are posted internally?

Had I stayed in that area I would have likely applied for an entry position (I was a CSCI major in school). Instead I moved to Northern Virginia, where land is EXPENSIVE, housing is a NIGHTMARE, and traffic is about as cool as herpes.

Found a job though

I thought my company was the only one still using PowerBuilder.

My PB skills are good, but I'm severly lacking in .NET.

Yeah - we are actively trying to get away from PB. Of course, when you have years of legacy apps written in it, it takes some time and effort...

But all new development is being done in .NET, usually as web apps. And we are acting on a plan to migrate legacy apps from PB to something else.

Would be if I worked in the city, but I live south in Fredericksburg.

No traffic = much easiar day. I'll take the slight pay cut for not working in the city

You can apply for the clearances after you accept the position, and you can work here while the investigations for the clearances take place. The company will pay all fees for acquiring the clearances.

However, if you apply for a clearance and are turned down, you will no longer have a job.

I'm graduating shortly with a CS degree and everyone is always talking about clearances. How would someone know if they would be able to obtain them etc. I have absolutely no criminal record, is that a good start?

Yes, that is a good start. Also having good credit is a plus.

That area is near the mountains of TN/VA/NC and very pretty (went to BOA contest at ETSU 2 years ago). NASCAR race nearby too.

You are correct. This area has a lot of things to offer if you are someone who likes the outdoors. Something like 75% of this county is desginated national forest.

And as you pointed out, about 45 minutes away is the Bristol speedway.
