That's 102 bullet holes from behind...in other words...as the two ladies were driving away, in a neon blue, not grey pickup truck.

No insult taken, but I am wise enough to know that the LAPD isn't going to pay for this regardless of how much they lose. It is the people of LA that will pay.

I certainly don't fall for the myth of "gotta get mine" either.

Well, that's the thing. There's not a myth of the greedy people. There aren't millions poured into marketing campaigns to sell you a false myth about them.

Of couse there are greedy people, and there is fraud, which is criminal when it can be caught, but there's no equivalence between the sides about who is propagandizing.

There are many misleading stories put out meant to deceive you.

We are getting way off topic, but if you want to see an example of the millions of dollars spent in marketing campaigns take a day off work and watch TV.
Every other commercial will be for an personal injury/class action attorney of some sort.
Of course, I could be just completely missing your point...

Why the hell does everyone think this has anything at all to do with the LAPD?

This is IRS regulation, pure and simple.

If LAPD gave the woman money to pay the income tax on the truck, she would still have to pay income tax on the money the LAPD gave her to pay income tax. It's not a "gift" because corporations and government entities cannot give "gifts" per IRS regs.

Anything she gets from the police will be income and will be taxed accordingly by the IRS (this isn't about paying the sales tax on the truck, that's an entirely separate matter).

In order to be exempt from income tax, the truck would have to be part of court-awarded damages, which it's currently not.

Bottom line, the LAPD has ZERO control over the tax issue. That's strictly the IRS.

They talked about this on the news yesterday. They are trying to get them the truck and not have them be on the hook for the taxes. I didn't pay much attention to it to hear what they are doing about that though.

\nm - didn't read closely enough....

Who needs a $30k truck when a jury will give you a six figure settlement?

Wow that blows. Freaking government, that's just as bad as how they tax the hell out of lottery winnings. I think the LAPD should just cover the taxes though, it's stupid they would not. But the part that's really stupid is the fact that it's even taxed at all. Tax was already paid on it when it was bought. Isin't that already enough?

Aparantly it's police procedure to always use up all your magazines on a single target. It's stupid, but apparently it's standard. At least that's what I've heard said here before.

You'd think cops would go to the range and practice regularly so they can actually aim and shoot, not just spray and pray.

Take the truck - Federal and State tax will be $10K+

They can donate their Swiss Cheese truck valued at $35K to the LAPD for practice.
LAPD provides a donation statement; Value of the truck has increased over KBB due to it's uniqueness and special needs required by LAPD to properly instruct officers on the art of viewing a moving vehicle and shooting accurately.

Better than a catastrophic loss of $30K

Everything will then come out in the tax wash.

I would just pay the taxes on the truck... from the millions they should win when they sue (spoken in complete ignorance of any California laws that may exist which limit damages awards against the state).

In other news, it baffles me that this was so effectively swept under the rug. This is something that warrants a DOJ investigation and possibly criminal charges... sitting here discussing whether they should get a free car or have to pay taxes on it is an insult to everyone's intelligence.

Have we heard anything as to whether these officers were ever placed on leave, paid or unpaid, investigations, etc.?

The pair was driving a dark-colored pickup truck with its lights off when they slowly approached the home of an officer named in ex-officer Christopher Dorner’s angry manifesto.

This means it wasn't attempted murder. What kind of dumbass drives around with their lights off? Unbelievably stupid.

Even so, the LAPD should be replacing the truck, and covering whatever costs are associated with doing so.

I really hope my sarcasm meter is broken.

I'm not sure what country you live in, but in mine, even if the occupant of the vehicle was Dorner/Saddam/Satan, police are generally not allowed to gun someone down with impunity and without an actual threat being presented.

Personally, I've seen a few cars on the road at night/early morning without their lights on... never really saw that as open season on filling the cars with lead.

Not only that, I think these women were delivering newspapers, so they were probably going pretty slowly.

Those vehicles did not have a shoot to kill order on them

Pretty much EVERY news paper delivery vehicle I have EVER seen doing
predawn deliveries in a RESIDENTIAL neighborhood do so with running
lights only, or maybe flashers. This might be a mandate, or request by
the city, or news paper, the reason for this should be obvious.
Even if the truck was a dead ringer,(lol), of Dorners truck, the cops had
NOOOO business just lighting it up! THIS WAS AN EXECUTION ATTEMPT !
The ladies deserve a huge pay out, and heads SHOULD roll, from the cops that fired, up the chain of command. Not since Nam, have I seen such wild firing of weapons. I shudder to think what will happen when the cops finally get rockets, and grenades. How do you get charlie out of the jungle? You don't, you light up the jungle. How do you get Dorner out of the neighborhood?
True Americans really need to draw a line in the sand with actions such as this. Sadly, this incident, and MANY like it are being swept under the carpet. Where were the throngs of media outside the hospital when these 2 ladies were discharged? Where are the multiple follow up stories
of THEM? WHAT is being done within this police department, and others?
WHEN will we be informed?
In other news, have you heard there's a new Pope?

Well it's still tax on a product nonetheless, still BS. So in the states if I decide to give something for free to someone, they have to pay tax on it? And I thought our system was crazy.

yeah i read that.

but Galpin Ford estimates the value of the truck – a 2013 Ford 150 SuperCrew – at $32,560. The dealership had planned on paying the sales tax, vehicle registration and title on the truck, according to a dealership spokesperson.

so they wouldn't pay any of that anyway.

that's the sales tax. The 1099 is being issued because of income tax implications. However, there are ways around that so the ladies aren't impacted - it's called Grossing Up the payment. It's a payroll technique used in cased where a company has agreed to compensate an employee such that their net tax effect is zero on a payment.

I was under the impression that you have to first identify and verify that it is your intended target before you engage in such an encounter. Obviously those LAPD "cops" weren't properly trained, proving how incompetent they are. Whoever made the decision to "shoot first and ask questions later" doesn't deserve to be in the police force.
