See my comments in the cities xl demo thread. I'll comment on my beta experiences once the NDA is finally lifted.

Downloading the demo - Is there anything in the game that could destroy your city or prevent it from being a success? I vaguely remember seeing pix of alien ships attacking buildings in Sim Cities

The multiplayer [sounds like an MMO] part seems pretty freakin cool - build your city and interact / trade resources with other people around the "virtual planet"

I'm excited to see the finished product...anyone else looking forward to this?

Nah its gonna suck, you have to pay extra cash for stuff like a railroad, you're only mass transit options are bus without buying extra "GEMS" they call them. The peeps over at simtropolis seem pretty pissed as well.

I was looking forward to it but its turned sour.

I think this game might be DOA, price is simply too high. $60 for a game, $6.32- $9.25 a month for a subscription and then you have to purchase the DLC and GEMS to get all the buildings, and basic needs like public transport.

Take a a game with a limited demographic, restrict and cripple it unless the customer shells out for more paid DLC and then GEMS on top of it. No thanks, MonteCristo can forget abut me buying the game.

I've palyed SimCity 1, 2000, 3000, 4, Societies, and never, once have I ever thought, "You know what would make this game better? The ability to talk to other players about how many prisons they have built, or maybe listening to a 14 year old rant about his mother."

That's messed up. I was really looking forward to having a good city builder. Guess I'll have to wait a while longer.

From what I've seen the play model is like this SP is part of the game... unless you want something like say.. railroads or beach enhancements. Then expect to shell out for a $2 to $20 series of GEMs(Gameplay Extension Modules, usual price will be $5-%15 each IIRC). On top of that if you want to play the multiplayer aspect, it seems to be subscription based and on top of that, subscriptions seem to buy you some content, but wont buy you any GEMS, so expect to buy GEMS on top of the subscription (though if you subscribe, you get 35% off on gems).

Basically it seems like MC didn't have the resources to fully finish the game and is going to nickel and dime you for additional content.

I would only be interested in SP too, but lets face it, If I have to pay $50-$60 for a game, $5 or $10 each for beaches and railroads that was included in SimCity 4 and possibly others as they come out, I'm not sure I can support that kind of business model.

I always get tempted to start sim city 4 again, but everytime I start I realize that I really suck at it and can't even get a town started so I just quit. I was thinking I would maybe give this a try but it sounds like its gonna suck (maybe not the game but paying for it).

lol i'm the same way. i still have sim city 4 (+rush hour) installed but i haven't touched it in a while. i love the game but i just don't have the patience for it. i keep making slums with a terrible roads system and everyone complains because the traffic sucks. then i god mode and blow everything up and quit.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I get going, start wishing it was SimCity 2000 with larger cities, and I quit. They really need an SC5.

It's a lot more playable with Rush Hour expansion. If you guys haven't check out simtropolis.com as they have buildings, parks, etc that produce income.

XL looks great and has potential, but after playing the demo it needs a lot of work and it's not a direct replacement for SC4. Just like Societies took a different path this one does too.

I love SC4...the mass transit model is just borked....buses only stop at bus stations? really? I've never been in a city where buses only stop at major stations. Plus people start abandoning cities when commute time gets above 20 minutes. Seriously? But yeah, I have entire regions almost completely filled, and when you get the give & take it's really cool. I thoroughly enjoy it.

I agree, F that. It sounds like you'd end up paying 30-40/month to have everything enabled.

Not sure if it would help you regionally but look into the NAM mods at simtropolis, they fix how the AI works as far as travel time, routes they take to buildings and usually include other transportation services.

There's also mods that combine bus stops and roads. The trick is that they block road access so they can only be placed in front of 2x2 or larger buildings.

Despite its many flaws, SC4 is definitely the best city builder yet, almost entirely on the basis of its mod capabilities. Any sim that is intended to surpass it will also have to beat it in modding, which cities XL obviously doesn't.

?? I ran into so many problems getting that game to run reliably, most of the time it was a slide show, even with powerful hardware for the time. Wonder if I should install it again and see how my Wolfdale and 4870 handles it.

I enjoyed Imperium Romanum and, to an extent, Caesar IV. I like that style of city builder, just wish Caesar IV was better optimized and had more support from Tilted Mill.

I used to have that problem, but when I tried it recently it worked fine. Just download the latest patch.

I hated how you had to develope neighbor cities yourself in SC4, enough so that I would rather play an earlier version.
