I came into work today. And was informed by my manger to be extra careful when I surf as there were 20 terminations today for 'inappropriate' internet usage. There was a lady who was sending 'porn' thru company email.

My manager wants to ban all 'forum' sites too. But I think I'm 'untouchable' as I sneak onto the net with a laptop and dialup ISP.

Does this kind of thing happens at your workplace? I didn't know 'inappropriate' internet usage can get immediate termination. They should just slap you with a warning first.

Sending porn over the company network? I don't think they deserve a warning...

never had any porn, but i hope they don't go after me for forum use.

the only problem i might have are spam messages in my email box from porn companys. i never click on them, but some have nasty titles.

WEll it is a clause in most company hand books refering to inapropriate usage of company resources or some sh!t like that. Usually it's a copout for pussy managers that don't want to tell someone they're getting laid off due to cutbacks.

Or, it's easier than getting a sexual harrasment lawsuit put on you because a one handed web surfer shows his nudie pics to a female coworker.

Not that I've seen that happen at a company or anything

I'm required to submit a daily report of all internet/strange mail usage by our employees. We had three people fired today for applying for other jobs through the company e-mail. And one was fired for spending about 4 hours on porn sites daily.

Not suprizing at all, they were not hired to pass around/surf pr0n, or create a company mp3 collection.

I think it is illegal to fire someone for looking for another job, but I could be wrong.

Not if they do it on company time, that would be considered neglecting to do their job. But hey, I'm not their boss, nor do I do the firing, I just supply the reports.

Not if they are using company resources to do so...

it is extremely against company policy to send pornographic emails/sexist emails...
Web browsing is also monitored... though it helps to be the network admin here

well at my job where i sell cell phones we just got an e-mail from our big boss. he said that ONLY managers can use the computer's internet to check e-mail. he said he will be doing random checks (looking into our history) and seeing if we have gone to any internet sites.

the only reason this started is because all of our computers were infected by the klez virus. people just open attatchments up from people they dont even know. i knew and know not to do that. but oh well, i can live without the inet at work.

Jesus..Some of you guys have it rough. Where I work they could care less if you look at porn..we can basically do anything we want as long as it's legal and customers don't see. The only thing they care about is you getting your job done. If you can do your job and then look at porn...fine.

Well, you all can hate me...

But my position would be this: I don't pay you to surf the net, therefore any net surfing not directly related to work would be 100% prohibited. Just as personal phone calls are banned or severely restricted in most places, so should personal internet surfing.

I wouldn't have a problem if you did it on your time with my equipment so long as you didn't abused my bandwidth. But then, someone would and I'd be forced to cut everyone off.

Think about this, what would you do if your gardener took an extra hour working at your house each week but all he did was use your computer to surf the net and send E-mails... and he charged you for that extra hour?

What would you say if your auto mechanic pulled your laptop out of your car, surfed the net for a few hours, and charged those hours as "labor" on your repair bill?

heh, gonna have to call you on that one. They go by 'labor time' logs, if the job takes 30 mins but the labor guide says it should take 2 hours, they charge you two hours.

One former employer simply put out three notices to all employees that unauthorized internet use is not permitted but did not single any employee out. It specifically mentioned pornography and file-sharing, though. I knew who was doing it and they just replied 'so what...big deal...I can do what I want'. They were fired a couple weeks later.

A lot depends on the nature of the job. For those who work in call centers, if their phone says "Available" they are doing their job. At my work it is fully expected that people will surf, but the rules are:

1) No porn (duh)
2) No games, including flash
3) No chat
4) No surfing while on calls

Porn will get youalked out the door no questions asked, the rest aren't enforced nearly as heavily.

But don't slam people automatically for surfing.

AmusedOne, I generally agree with you, but there are some situations where I can see some flexibility.

Tech support, or positions that basically require you to be at your desk from XX:XX to XX:XX, even if you have nothing to do are some areas that I can see allowing non-work related web access.

If an employee has to be on the clock, even if they aren't working, then I'd rather keep them at their desks ready to answer the phone, than have them wandering about the building keeping themselves occupied.

Just my observations from working a call center.

I can understand call centers allowing you to surf in between calls. I mean, I'm not completely inflexable guys
