So my friend and I went out for Sushi last night, just a little but, the waiter never once came back asking if we wanted refills on our drink, then after putting our coats on when we were done, we sat waiting for the check for about 15 minutes. The place was not busy there were only 3 tables with customers.

Hence, our check came to $13.80 and we left $14

Would you also do this or are you an automatic tipper no matter what?

I usually leave 15% unless something really bad happens. For really good service or around the holidays I may leave 30%. Word gets around here.

In the OP's case I would always leave a tip even if it's only $.20
I don't want them thinking I forgot.

Exactly. $0.20 is *worse* than $0.00. I make them to know it was a conscious decision. Of course, I always leave a note if there is any chance they don't know *why* they suck; but usually, they know.

naa most don't know. they just get pissed that the OP did nto give them the 30% that they are DUE.

to many think a tip is mandatory and not a bonus.

I hate it when they don't refill my drinks. I usually look for the water container and just take one for my table.

Also I'm the type to tip 0.01 in those cases.

Same for me. Good service = good tip. I dont do that automatic 15% bullshit.
If the service stinks (and theres no reason for it) I give them nothing.

20 cents isnt cool. Its just an insult. If I didnt like the service I would complain or stop going.

If it's been 15 minutes since everyone at the table has finished their meal, and the waiter or waitress hasn't stopped by to see if you need anything else (including the check), that's definitely too long. Especially if the place isn't very busy, since then they don't have the excuse of a lot of other customers to wait on.

Besides which, if the place is busy, wouldn't you want to clear a table out as soon as possible, to get it filled with another party, and thus, another tip??

How many rolls did you order? $13.80 sounds like you got one real roll and one california roll.

Between 2 people, that's not a lot of food.

The japanese place I go to by work charges $12.95 for a bento box for lunch. Sushi during dinnertime is going to cost way more than $13.80 there.

OP: What did you order?

i would have left 1.00 probably... but wouldnt have left 15%

I usually say a dollar a person is absolute minimum but for a 13 dollar bill for 3 people that would be giving more than deserved

I'm usually an automatic tipper, but what you did was not wrong at all. However, the advice of the Washington Post's food critic is usually the best in this case, you should've asked for a manager and brought it to their attention after the bill was paid. That way it doesn't look like you're trying to get something for nothing, but you're also letting them know that the service was bad enough that you might not return.

I understand this thinking, but I'd rather save 20 cents and not care what they think. Probably a better reason why I would leave the 20 cents is because I would want to wait another minute just to get my change.
