Nothing wrong with tipping .20 in that case, especially since you probably didn't want to wait another 15 minutes for your change. The waiter may have figured since the bill for your table was so low they didn't really care if they got the $3 or whatever.

So it seems like you guys are saying that the only reason they bring you food and bring your drinks is because of the tips??? They are in the Customer Service Industry. Their job is to serve me whether they get tips or not.

When you go out to eat with friends, do you make your friends cover your share of the tip?

It seems like you've asked this already a couple of times. Can't come up with anything new?

Think it's funny how you don't answer the question.

It's called splitting the bill. It seems like you want tipping to be mandatory. If they wanted it that way it would be but it's not so I don't have to do it.

Who the hell do you eat with that you don't pitch in for the tip after splitting the bill? You're supposed to pay for your own meal, then add a couple of bucks to the total tip.

Do you guys not understand the point of tipping? Waiters make less than minimum wage without tips. When you're paying for the food, you're not putting much money towards the waiter's service. Saying that "It's their job to serve me no matter what" is just being an asshole. Do you not tip the person who carries your bags at a hotel, either, just because it's their job?

It being their job doesn't mean you get to treat them like shit. If someone does a good job, you're supposed to show them some sort of gratitude - in this case, a GRATUITY. Dumbfucks.

Edit: And you know that in some parts of the world tipping is mandatory, right? Assholes like you don't tip, so they just build it into the price of the food. You're not exempt from social norms just because you think you're above the people servicing you.

I got no problem if you making tipping part of the price. I pay for the food and agent(aka waitress aka employee) brings me the food. That waitress works for the company with which i made contract, you give me food and i will give you money for it. I have no contract with the waitress, i owe nothing more to waitress. Waitress have contract with the employer. If the waitress feels he/she do not make enough money they should either find another job or talk to employer about paying them more. Either way, it don't matter to me how much the waitress makes. It's not my business.

If service is bad, I leave a low tip. A low tip is more degrading than no tip. If the server is having a bad day, that's their problem. Don't make it mine. I didn't make you mad. I have tip money in my pocket. You keep my glass full and bring my ticket in a timely manner, I'll leave the tip on the table.

I'm glad most people aren't like looker001. We'd be surrounded by assholes if there were more of him.

lol @ people who don't understand that looker101 is not a person, it is a formula. The mods click on a post and the looker101 formula will disagree with it taking a firm stance that only a complete asshole would take, in order to get a rise out of you. A tipping thread is just the place to use it.

Tip = performance based pay. I've tipped as high as 100% (only done it twice in my life, and they earned it), and as low as 0%. All depends on the performance.

Actually tip was never supposed to be based on performance. A 15% tip is customary for service rendered.

i hope you're kidding

That is not a joke. Basic tipping was never supposed to be about performance...good tips are warranted for above and beyond, but should not be expected.

What has happened is people have become cheap and make up shit to the point everyone believes it.

Also people go to the typical friday night cattle herd type places and expect Four Seasons type service.

ATOT has proven though that many of our members should be staying at home with their parents or half dozen roommates as they don't make enough to be eating out and expect to justify why they shouldn't have to tip. It's sad really...

I will make it very simple for you, I pay for the food that i requested and anything above that should not expected. If you are not happy with that, you can look for new job.

I hope you don't eat out at the same places enough to be noticed. If I was your waiter and knew you were like this, I would make sure you got the least attention. Knowing 99% of the other customers would tip me and you wouldn't. Would lead to you getting the worst service I could provide. Thankfully I'm not a waiter and don't have to deal with idiots like you.
I am sure you would happe when mananger gave you a warning because as result of your bad service, he/she had to make my food free.

Not likely, because my other 6 customers would rave about how good my service is. You can't please everyone, and only a fool of a server would give you as much attention knowing you won't tip. MOST places if you complain, at best you'll get a free slice of pie or something small. You won't get free food for being an asshole though ha.

Here in Cali, they make minimum wage + tips so they're making great money and if they make less than minimum wage, their boss has to cover the tips so they make at least minimum wage.

This is true. Posters from other states can claim that their wages are pathetic, but not here in CA. It's even more reason not to tip.

Btw, I always tip, generously too, good or bad service. At my favorite restaurant, I routinely put down $5 or $6 for a $11-$14 meal.

Generally I don't tip, or tip that well, with bad service (I might have left $1.20 to make it an even $15 tip in the OP's situation). I have found that the place that I frequent, I try to leave a better tip. I do make money now, and am not a starving law student, so tips aren't so much about my financial ability to pay. I have found myself giving bigger tips for better service now, though. Still bad service gets bad tips.

It's service industry.

The place was not busy there were only 3 tables with customers.

Hence, our check came to $13.80 and we left $14

Would you also do this or are you an automatic tipper no matter what?

I'd have done that in a second. If you want to further prove your point you list out on the receipt stuff that the waiter did (or did not do) that pissed you off. That way it's formally documented, and you get the added bonus of the manager seeing it when he/she collects receipts at the end of the night.

My gf, however, is an automatic tipper and feels bad when she leaves less than 15%. Not me though.
