i hope you're kidding

That is not a joke. Basic tipping was never supposed to be about performance...good tips are warranted for above and beyond, but should not be expected.

What has happened is people have become cheap and make up shit to the point everyone believes it.

Also people go to the typical friday night cattle herd type places and expect Four Seasons type service.

ATOT has proven though that many of our members should be staying at home with their parents or half dozen roommates as they don't make enough to be eating out and expect to justify why they shouldn't have to tip. It's sad really...

I will make it very simple for you, I pay for the food that i requested and anything above that should not expected. If you are not happy with that, you can look for new job.

So basically you are the asshole that the entire restaurant industry hates?

Sure, the entie industry thinks they deserve the tip because they provide you service. I will not type unless someone does something above normal duty of their work.

What's a type? Are you trolling or are you this dense for a 28 year old, never had a job, lives with his parents, virgin?

Please tell me you know how the Restaurant industry pay structure for servers is and you're just being a trolling asshole?

Yes i am SOB, Yes i am 28, yes i am woking in real estate industry right now and no i am not a virgin. Anything else you want to know?

Of course you work in real estate. Where their commission structure is even MORE PATHETIC than the restaurant tipping industry.

Please please tell me you are a realtor. I would love to have a field day with your ridiculous pay for doing absolutely nothing.

Again, you show your absolute ignorance. Seriously, you're 28 years old who has never worked and lives at home. Why would we care about anything you say?

Tipping D-bag waiters 101

1. Get yourself a CLEAR empty water glass (the bigger the better).
2. Fill it with water until it nearly overflows.
3. Take about $1-$2 of change out of your pocket.
4. Plop change into glass off water.
5. Wait until change sinks all the way to the bottom of the glass (very important!).
6. Add more water making sure the glass is overflowing
7. Place folded paper dinner napkin on top of glass. The napkin will become wet but this is necessary.
8. Carefully and quickly flip over the glass of water on the table so that the bottom of the glass is pointing towards the ceiling. This is also know as "upside down".
9. Watch the change sink to the napkin.
10. Stare in amazement as the water does not leak out!
11. Notice how it looks as if there is some loose change under an "empty" glass (savvy waitstaff will conclude this is a gratuity, and be grateful; your plan has worked!).
12. Leave in a quick but orderly fashion.
13. Paying the check is optional (consult your local and state laws).
14. Plan on never visiting that restaurant again.

Not many places left for you to dine at eh?

Used once.

I'd like to add it's preferable to choose a good vantage point outside the restaurant where you may see the ensuing hilarity of the aquatic gratuity.

I didn't realize that all wait staff at all restaurants are the bottom of the barrel. Maybe I can afford to dine at The French Laundry after all. I needn't bother tipping the wait staff there, so it would be a good $75 cheaper per person.

i would love to see tipping done away with. it's like socialism for eating out. (no i don't have a problem with socialism per se, but this is a socialism based on cheapness not on ability and need.)
a lot of people don't realize that waiters get paid far less than minimum wage because they are expected to get tips.

the problem is that would mean waiters would have to be paid at least minimum wage.
which means higher prices for the food.
i tip well usually so that doesn't affect me, however all of the tightwads will end up paying more.

and no i've never been a waiter.

wow my little post really blossomed into a full grown thread.

Note, after leaving the sushi place, we went out for burgers, and tipped $5.00 on a $15 dollar check. It's all about the service.

Your 20 cent tip was at least justified. What sucks is that there are freeloaders and douchebags (looker001) who don't ever tip, and these are the people that make it harder for the server to know whether they gave poor service or their customer is just a self-absorbed asshole (Still talking to you looker001).

Just because you drop food at someone's table makes you special??? If you're not making enough money being a waiter get a new job. Customer Service jobs have always been bottom of the barrel jobs. They make minimum wage here and no need for more just cus they think they deserve it.

No, being an asshole would understate it. You are a piece of shit. You are the type of human being that deserves to be put in his place. I hope someone in your real life will someday set you straight, but I doubt it.

I am sure everyone you surround yourself truly knows how big of a piece of shit you are.

EDIT: You are also probably the douchebag at the group meal that never leaves enough money. I absolutely hate that person when we are eating out in a group and at the end of the meal we find out that we are short a some money. All because of shitheads like looker001 who thinks that social norms dont apply to him.

I skimmed the thread and read bits here and there, but am I to understand that he is a piece of shit SOLELY because he doesn't tip? (Does he ever say he never tips?). I don't know if historically tipping was not about performance or not, but that's the understanding of nearly everyone now. You give shitty service, don't expect a tip.

In the OP's case I would always leave a tip even if it's only $.20
I don't want them thinking I forgot.

Exactly. $0.20 is *worse* than $0.00. I make them to know it was a conscious decision. Of course, I always leave a note if there is any chance they don't know *why* they suck; but usually, they know.

As someone who works at a restaurant, if the waitresses start bitching about xxx table and how they only gave them a xxx tip, they just think your an asshole and it never crosses their minds that the tip is a representation of the poor service the customers got.

Your would have to leave a note for them to notice otherwise. Then again, they'd still think your an asshole.

Actually, no matter what you do you are still going to be the one with the problem in their eyes. I've never met anyone who waited tables who has ever thought the problem was them.

No no no. What the basic understanding of the thread is, the OP is fine with the way he tipped because he was given bad service.

The problem I had in this thread was shitheads like looker001 who NEVER tip simply because they think if the waiter isn't making enough money at their job, they should find a new one. There is no real reason why he doesn't tip (I think its because hes obviously foreign and has a disdain for it), he just simply doesn't do it.

Tipping is definitely bullsh!t.

I think it stems from back in the day, when the upper/royalty class thought it would be fun to give money to the poor/peasant class. At that time, tipping made sense.

Today, it's not just the rich that go out to eat, all classes of society enjoy dining out. However, while a family may be able to afford eating out, that does not mean they can afford tipping. Does that mean that if you can't afford to tip then you should not eat out? No you dumbfucks, that is not the case.

In conclusion, if you are rich, you should be mandated by law to tip. If you are middle or lower class, tipping should be optional.
