A friend of mine actually arrived in Vegas late evening on saturday, and did this trick. The guy at the counter apparently worked for a few minutes to find an upgrade, and did find him a room with a better view. ^_^

I only tried a couple times, and the hotel was full each time. Wicked Spoon is a fun buffet, but aside from the novelty of little serving containers, the food is pretty standard buffet food.

As someone who works in the hospitality industry, the front desk agents have a lot of leeway. They can book you at your original SRP/room rate in pretty much any room. Most are empowered to upgrade a customer (for customer satisfaction) at no charge. With that being said, their ass is fired if they upgrade a Joe Schmoe with a bargain basement room to a villa. Upgrading to a suite a few floors up won't make a big difference, but a lot of it depends on occupancy and overbooked rate.

I have only tried this once, it was at the Aria last year - it didn't work, she just slid it on the table back to me and said that they were about full and didn't have any rooms available. It was worth a shot I guess.

I think they just enter some BS reason in the computer as to why the room wasn't what was originally reserved. Besides, Vegas is completely service driven and nothing drives service likes tips. I would have thought a place like the Cosmo would require more than $20 for success. I used a $50 at Vdara last month. Got a better view but unfortunately the place was pretty booked so there wasn't much availability. But the girl certainly was a lot friendlier as a result.

Vegas is an odd place in the US where this works almost every time. Sadly the $20 seems to be more and more common so I think this will cause an increase of the dollar amount required for success to slowly rise. Fortunately its seedy enough that I don't think the increased notoriety of the $20 'trick' will cause it to disappear.

Wouldn't the front desk clerk get fired if he/she got caught doing that?.

From what I have heard a number of them have payment scheme understandings where x% of the offered amount has to make it up the chain

I've done the $20 trick a few times. It worked when I stayed at the Venetian and THEHotel, but didn't work at the Bellagio cause it was already full.

Hoping to try this at the Luxor this weekend. Staying with a group of 6 so a bigger room would be nice.

I have used the $20 trick many times, and once had to use $50

Success:
Caesars Palace - 1x Success w/ $20 - this was the first place I ever did the $20 trick and we got upgraded to a baller room
The Wynn - 2x success w/ $20. Got 70th floor room on corner. We stayed right below the Y in Wynn. 2nd time got 69th floor corner room.
Bellagio - 1x success with $50. Got upgraded to fountain/strip view room
Hard Rock Hotel - tried $20 tip, he refused tip and 'upgraded' us for free. Not sure how good the upgrade was as we had to walk what seemed like a mile to get outside of the casino
Planet Hollywood (back when it was aladdin) - 1x success w/ $20. Room was meh even with upgrade

Fail:
Monte Carlo - Did not work at all. This hotel blows anyways

i'm just gonna mention that we're there for my wifes 30th bday as well wonder if that will help at all.

With sandwiched $20 bill:

"Hi I'm booking for my wife's birthday and wanted to do something special for her. Do you have any complimentary upgrades available?"

but is it really her birthday?

Or is she really your wife?

Every time I come up with a reason not to do it, usually because there are two people checking me in or the manager is right over her shoulder and for some reason I get nervous about it and chicken out.

One of these days...

I was able to tip to a better room at the Cosmo a few months back. There wasn't any trick I used other than straight out asking if I tipped could I get a better room. The lady smiled and said yes. We ended up with a King Suite overlooking the Bellagio. YMMV of course...

well it failed for me just now. i slipped the guy a $20 between my ilcense and cc and told him we're here for my wifes 30th bday and if there were any complimentary upgrades. he then said he will see what he can do and handed me the $20 back and i was like you can keep it. he said to let us first do the transaction before he can accept anything.

ended up getting the normal room i booked, and he tried to upsale me on a wrap around for $75/day extra instead of $100/night extra so just didn't do it.

that said, we still have a a sick ass room with a direct view off the balcony at gordon ramsay's face!
